Got the cal

Hey all,

I got the call I was on the waiting list for a GMT and Sub and my third watch was the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 watch: Oystersteel and Everose

It's £13,500 I've never made such a large purchase in my life, I am unsure if I should go ahead. I was originally on the list about a year ago because I could buy it wear it for a couple years and not loose so much money.

I guess if I buy it and wear it and sell in a few years for £10k id be happy. Not sure if thats the case.

Im a tech guy, always worn an Apple Watch so going into this is kinda a big deal for me.

The reason I want a Rolex is because my friend has one and when I put it on my wrist, I felt amazing, it feels so nice on the wrist.

Then I ask myself what should I be earring to own a Rolex? I am still renting, I have the money to buy it....just unsure I guess.

With a car, you know what your buying you know you will loose some money and can sell. Should I have the same mindset?

Thanks for the support !

Yes, OP should only buy the YM if he loves it and can afford it but it is also completely normal to have second thoughts especially when it’s your first expensive watch.

No one can answer this for you OP but the fact you are having second thoughts alone does not
mean you should pass. It just means you’re a rational and methodical human being contemplating a big purchase.

I don't know your financial situation and cannot predict the future value of these watches so I can't give a specific recommendation. However, if you're going to be upset if the value of your watch drops below $10K, then perhaps it's best not to purchase.

The two tone YM40 is not a very high demand piece so it will likely still be available should you want it in the future

You only live once, my friend. If this particular watch gives you that amazing feeling, go for it! It probably won’t be your last Rolex, though.

I wouldnt buy that model if you are worried about money. If it were a Daytona, Sub, GMT you could pay retail knowning that if you ever needed the money you could sell it and at the least break even.

Way too many doubts. Plus it wasn't first or second on your list!

Pass. Hard pass.

OP seems much more concerned about value retention and selling in future than expressing a clear desire to buy jewellery.

So he should be wise not to part from his cash.

I would plan on losing 40 percent on that watch after 2 years of wear.

Two Tone watches are not my cup of tea.... Again, if you have to ask, don't buy it!

Third on your list and with doubts on resale - I’d pass and hold out for something you’re more sure about.

If you were offered a GMT or Sub then I would advise you to proceed as they will hold their value. It’s not 100% clear but I presume you have been offered a Yacht Master? To be honest I would pass on the YM - like others have said it will lose quite a bit of money.

If you can’t afford to buy it twice, you can’t afford it. I’ve used this rationale for years on all types of purchases, helps me detach from my emotional state of mind in the decision making process.
Above all remember “when you can’t have what you want, it’s time to start wanting what you have”. I genuinely hope you make the right decision & enjoy your chosen timepiece.

If your concern is value retention, don't buy the watch or any "expensive" watch. If you love it and plan to keep it, then go for it.

Go for it, you have the money and you will probably get back 9-10k if you need to sell it or more likely want to trade into something else, doubt your finances are hinging on this purchase so unless they are then have fun.

You'll only ever get one first-Rolex purchase.

Make it count.

Wait for number 1.

You’ll know when you’re ready, kinda like you know that you’re not ready now. Buy for love, nothing else.

If there is a doubt there is no doubt. You can revisit it at your convenience. When the time/watch/situation is right you'll be posting an incoming, not asking if it's sensible to proceed.

W a car, you know what you are buying? So, you don't know you are buying a watch? You don't know you are buying a Rolex?

Do not think buying a rolex is an investment that will increase in value few years of wearing it.

Better off saving the money towards a down payment for a house/real estate.
