To Trade or Not to Trade....

....that is the question and hope to receive feedback from users that have both pieces being considered.

Current Rolex's in my lineup incude a 116300 DJII Silver Dial, 114060 Sub and 126720VTNR GMT. I'm considering trading my 2019 Sub + cash for a 2022 116500LN black dial Daytona.

My thoughts are that the dial and overall look of the Sub and GMT are very similar and that the Daytona would bring some additional versatility to my collection in the looks department plus via the Chronograph complication, however the Sub is my first Rolex sports model and tends to be my daily "beater".

If you currently have both, which do you prefer and why and if you've let a Sub go for a Daytona is it missed?

Any and all responses are welcome and thanks in advance - Cheers!

i previously owned 2 sub (black & bluesy) & 1 GMT (half gold) before switching to a Daytona 116500LN Black.

indeed the dial for sub n GMT are similiar. but to me a daytona is a holy grail so i hav no issue with the switch. however if u are someone who needs to check the date then Daytona cannot offer you that.

Im not a fan of the Daytona, just never have been so personally Id rather a sub and perhaps look at a Speedmaster for a chrono to bring some variety to your collection.

If you LOVE the Daytona and don't love the sub you should consider it, the Daytona is a watch MANY love

Love Daytona more than any other watch, however, I’d try one on to make sure you love it like I do.

Don’t expect anyone to notice it. You need to love it because it will cost you a pretty penny.

On the other hand, the tool look of the Sub with fully brushed oyster bracelet is so trouble free and classic.

Sub wears bigger than Daytona. They are not similar.

I love the look of the older daytona’s but not as big a fan of the newer ones so based off that I’d stick with the sub

As much as I love the black SS Daytona, my grail, I would never feed the grey market. I don’t trust they are authentic and prices will fall. AD only.

My best friend just picked up the 126 black dial .. it is stunning, I’m not sure there’s a whole lot of difference between 116/126 whatever anyone else says, I have 116 white dial .. but Daytona is a slightly smaller watch and I feel the difference if I flit between Daytona and GMT .. so you need to try on first ..

Although I'm a Daytona fan - the problem here is the higher (almost 2x) price for preowned vs a Sub.

Trade + cash on your proposed deal means getting less for your Sub than it is really worth AND paying more to the same person for the Daytona.

Overall, in my opinion, it's like wasting money to have a chronograph.

Now if the deal is your Sub + $5k, then I'd say differently.

How much cash does he want?

I would not trade a Sub, but I’m not a fan of the Daytona. It’s a hype chrono. I’d rather have a Speedmaster 321.

Sub is replaceable but a great daily. I'd dump the gmt for a daytona though.

I would flip the DJ ii even though you would have to put more $$ into the deal. It makes more sense in the long run.

As you say a ceramic sub and a ceramic GMT are very similar. The Daytona is a beautiful and special watch. I would absolutely do that trade!

I wouldn't sell the Sub. Especially if it's your daily go-to.

I would keep what you have and add a SS Omega Speedmaser 3861 on bracelet. I have owned all of the Daytona's in every metal and I get it. Huge flex watch but not worth the money to me.

The daytona is for you. if you really want it then get it. I love mine, i love looking at it, i love it reminding me where i am in life. I really enjoy taking it with me on trips. I traded my gmt master 2 and explorer 2 for it. I do miss my explorer two but i love my daytona more.

A hype chrono ?
Not sure I follow this logic other than on this forum where I see people bemoan a Daytona as only bought because of the ‘hype’ .. not sure it’s anymore hyped up than any other Rolex model, if I’m honest, I certainly didn’t buy a grey market 116500 on the back of hype - it has no date function, no dual time zone, so not sure how it can have hype .. I’ve never dived in my life but have a Submariner - well when I say dived, I have, but that’s for the late night section, I have a GMT - but this was bought due to travel for work, and a lefty too not because of hype, I struggle when I read this type of comment, MSRP for Daytona is just short of £14k .. grey anywhere up to £29K for white dial 126, I don’t think people are paying those prices simply because of hype, I may be wrong and you along with many others may disagree that’s your right to an opinion same as I have mine ..
I love the whole ethos and historical beauty of the Daytona, but hey that’s just me ..

Go for it, but ask a local AD, or two if they would do the trade. Especially if they deal in pre-owned sales or offer the CPO program. Maybe you can get a new one at retail. You can always replace the Sub down the line if you are so inclined.

Maybe “hype” is a misnomer. How about “huge flex watch”? Truthfully, I never saw the appeal, but I do love the Omega Speedmaster. I never should have sold my original hessalite crystal hand wind Speedy Pro.

Adding the Daytona adds a new complication to your collection, depends how much you wear your sub imo. If you wear it alot dont trade it!
