AD walk in purchase last week

Went to my local AD to see about engraving a watch for a gift, and was able to see and try on several watches that had arrived the day before. The titanium
Yachtmaster amazed me at how light it was when compared to my 2000 era platinum Yachtmaster.
While trying on other models I casually asked what could I go home with and low and behold I was offered a 40mm explorer, Air king, and a Yachtmaster with the light blue hands.
So I ended up taking home the Air king, as I already have a Yachtmaster.
Also enjoyed an ice cold Stella Artois while I was having the band sized. I’ve been fortunate to be offered multiple Rolexes this past year and purchased 3
Rolexes from the AD.

As to the titanium Yachtmaster, just my two cents, but I like feeling some weight when I am wearing a Rolex,or any watch for that matter. Of course flying under the radar with the subdued looks of that model would be interesting. Watch crazy people ( like me) would spot it from a distance and smile knowingly as we would be in the company of another person who appreciates timepieces.

When is enough enough

You would have thought I’d be out of the watch buying mode as three weeks ago while in Scottsdale, and visiting the cool mall there, I brought home these 3 pieces.

Very nice choice. The recent updates to the AK have really elevated it from a quirky reference to one desired by many.

Congrats and enjoy!

Congratulations on your new Airking its one of the longest production runs of any Rolex started way back in the 1940s.And today underrated by some but its a great watch with a lot of history, but like all ADs they are in business for one thing only. And that's to sell as many of the products to anyone who enters there retail store.

I never really looked into the storied history of the Air King until now. The watch changed over the decades, yet the name carried on over the years and being a history buff, really makes me appreciate the model even more!
Thanks everyone on the comments and happy watch collecting

I wrote this many years ago on forum Some say the first Airkings were particularly designed for pilots as such but IMHO they were not, but world war 11 did have a part to play with the Airking. And many models now becoming collectible especially the Airking dates especially the red date roulette wheel. Now before WW11 Rolex was always popular with the armed forces in the UK,now old Hans being a good business man saw there was a market for a slightly bigger watch. Now watches at these times were quite small 30m and under were the average size. Now Rolex started producing 33m models under the names of Air Lion,AirTiger,AirGiant and the Airking. They all used a 15 jewel manual wind movement, then came in S.steel even a TT plus all gold but mainly then 9ct.And were in production from the mid 1940s to early 1950s when they were all dropped, except for the Airking. Now over the next few years the Air king gained a auto movement and now the same size as OP,and some of the most sort after Airkings now are models like the 1960s 5504 with the honeycombed dial. Now the first Airking date arrived on the scene late 1960s Ref 5700 were only sold in the then Commonwealth countries like Canada and the UK.Now they made a 5700n Explorer Date but that was only sold in the USA.Later 1970s 5701 Airking dates had the cal.1525/35 movements, and they made a TT version of the 5701 quite rare, but again for the Canadian only market but the Airking date faded out of production in the 1980s. IMO a shame the Airking has quite a lot of history, and IMHO now a very very underrated watch. With some modern Airkings have the retro look 1950s dials, myself prefer the Oyster bracelet over the Jubilee.

Congratulations on the airking, such an underrated piece and good weight to it as well. Hope it gets some wrist time among your collection.
