Patek - the one true luxury brand …

https://www.watchpro.com/20-reasons-...m_medium=email

I have to agree.

Let’s hope the new and much speculated range hits the spot!

One true luxury brand…Not exactly. Can’t agree with that as that is silly IMHO.

Seems overly specific regarding such a vague concept.

While I tend to agree on some level,
There is Lots of fluff and even inaccuracies in the criteria.

I do have more confidence in patek than other brands.

Of course all of their models are not sought after, nor do they all retain value.

Their customer service has always (in my experience) been at the highest level. Under promise and over deliver.
If we are talking luxury this is certainly a top requirement.

Vs Rolex whose service I would compare to the local gas station (no offense meant to the gas stations)

I love Patek as much as the next guy, but I hate the heritage and family claims. After Pateks death the company changed hands several times ultimately ending up with the sterns in 1932 nearly defunct. Saying Patek has a claim to the 1800s heritage is only slightly less egregious than what Lange does but a quite bit less than the nonsense Czapek spits out. AP really is the only watch manufacturer with true family heritage claims if it even matters

Sure but the sterns already made dials for Patek before the took. Most luxury brands claim a heritage and the reality is maybe quite different. Never felt Patek did that though to a point like Berluti - now LVMH owned and makes claims the former owner shined her shoes on the moonlight with champagne to get a special patina

Agree with some of the points he makes, especially the influencer piece. Other points are difficult to justify.

They are one hell of a watchmaker though and the experience I had buying one was special, no doubt about that.

the only watches appreciating are nautilus and aquanaut purchased new today. and that secondary markup is dissipating. Meanwhile calatravas and most complications are taking a bath under retail.

Interesting responses. The writer gave his reasons which are criticised but why do you buy Patek? What draws you to the humoungously priced Veblen good?

Some responses referred to investment/price/depreciation. I don’t think anyone buying watches ought to treat them as investments even though the odd piece might rocket in price.

Here are some economists explanations..

There are many other top tier hand assembled and hand finished brands which meet or exceed Patek standards. Many of the points made are irrelevant. To me luxury is in the current physical product itself and nothing more. How it is made, of what materials, how it is finished and how it performs. Who cares when the company started and how they otherwise operate.

I LOL’ed #17 - Discreet: no need for influencers, brand ambassadors & gaudy celebs.

I am on one of the Patek Facebook groups - all the celebrities wearing PP’s makes me not want one. Not really, I still want one.

People are queuing for years to buy some of the highly priced PP luxury watches, celebrating their purchases as well as following and interacting on the Patek discussion platform.

How many watch brands selling at these toppy price levels can say the same? True there are niche manufacturers making excellent pieces but that’s the point - tiny production levels, no longevity in the market and no promise to repair all their old products for all time - and that, I imagine, is the importance of their history boast.

Veblen Goods - Go figure - one has to be a bit bonkers to buy into Patek. Why do you buy, want, care what others do or follow Patek on sites like this?
