Incoming Patek 5980 1/R 001
As part of this ongoing hobby, I decided to offload several watches to consolidate into a single piece through a straight trade. I’ve gone through a few collection-reduction phases before, but this time I’m really focusing on trimming my collection to a more manageable size and cutting down on the rotation time, compared to my previously bloated lineup.
Here’s what I traded in: - Patek Philippe 5980/1A Stainless Steel 2014 - Rolex Daytona White Dial (11 Series) 2021 - Rolex Daytona Black Dial (11 Series) 2018 - Rolex Sky-Dweller Blue Dial on Oyster 2023 - Bvulgari Endurer Chronosprint - 2019 My total cost on these was $131K, so I feel it was a solid trade overall. The 2017 5980 Rose was recently serviced in late 2022 by Patek and unworn since returning. Shout out to Gary at Gluxe Jewelers in Miami for another hassle-free, top-notch trading experience! Highly recommend these guys for anyone in the market to consolidate. https://gluxejewelers.com

Thanks! I held onto my Zenith Daytonas because, honestly, I think Rolex nailed the aesthetics with those. The new 12 series brings back that classic look with the slimmer sub-dials, hands, and hour markers, which I really appreciate. I’m planning to re-add a black dial 12 series along with a 12 series on Oysterflex to my collection—feels like the perfect balance of old-school design with modern updates.

Congrats, that's a beautiful reference.
I would have tried to keep the SS 5980 but I think it was a right step to let the Daytonas and Skydweller go for that special one. |

The 5980 was definitely what I considered my halo piece so I didn’t wear it for mundane occasions. After much consideration that fact relegated it to the chopping block since the Rose will replace the SS usage in my collection

You failed because you couldn’t rustle up the trade aspect with a dealer? Or, you couldn’t bring yourself to part with the SS? If it’s the prior I create an excel spreadsheet with all the watches I’d be willing to trade adding C24 benchmark prices and my desired price and then just fire that out to dealers and await feedback. It works like a charm or has for all my previous trades and this one. If you would like an example of my spreadsheet drop me a DM.

Well, in my humble opinion, you’re missing out on one of the great pleasures this hobby brings us, especially with Rolex watches that either hold most of their value or, if bought at AD, often are worth more. I derive as much pleasure feom honing and fine tuning the collection as I do the new reference hunt. It’s all in good fun and can end up being very rewarding

$131k USD for an "as new" fully serviced and unused 5980 Rose is pretty impressive, so I definitely agree. That said, it’s crucial for members with large collections to stay aware of the current market and the big challenges dealers are facing when it comes to moving high-end pieces like these. In my last two major trades, including this one, I found that dealers are more willing to make concessions to convert these heavy-hitter pieces into multiple watches that are easier to move, with more accessible price points for the current market downturn.
It’s a lot easier to offload a couple of Ceramic Daytonas than it is to sell a single watch worth $50k to $60k. That’s why, in my trade, I turned one watch into five that are easier to move. For anyone with a large collection, now’s the time to consolidate if you’ve been thinking about it. Dealers need to shift those high-priced, harder-to-move pieces to keep cash flow going, so there are definitely deals to be made!

Congratulations! I've personally thought about consolidating my watches as well but haven't been able to make up my mind for it, your posts provide lots of good insights, thanks for sharing!

Considering your out of pocket costs on what you traded, you did well. You damn near got the 5980 at the last MSRP price after tax.
Well done and congrats. |

Yes, you are right. I have the original receipt for the watch which was purchased at Patek Philippe, Marbella, Spain. With the tax at 21% (Spain) it was well over the 131k USD I had invested in those traded pieces when the Euros retail price is converted to USD. Pretty good outcome
