What are peoples opinions on the John Mayer?

Already have a Panda - love it. I'm thinking about adding the JM.

Love the YG/green look and it compliments my collection, but I'm a little nervous that I'll look like a peacock. Anybody feel self conscious wearing it?

Thinking about the WG/blue dial 116509 as an alternative.

Maybe the 116508/Paul Newman as a compromise between the two.

I think you should buy what you actually want and don't compromise.

I never have an issue wearing it.

The WG blue dial is nice, I have the 3 you mentioned, steel YG & WG.

It's very hard to pick a favourite to be honest. The WG probably has it, because I could wear it to anything.

Buy what you want.

IMO not worth the hype. But then, I am really not a fan of YG.

Sorry, off topic but when looking up the VC you mentioned, I found this:

https://www.vacheron-constantin.com/...000p-h033.html

Holy cow, what the heck is this?!

To the OP: If you already have a Panda Daytona, a white gold one would look rather similar. If the John Mayer is too flashy, how about a yellow gold or rose gold Daytona on Oysterflex?

But hype sells watches today as many buy the hype to wear it, look at the Daytona great movement but got to be the most hyped Rolex watch ever.

This!!

It is pretty amazing in person. The one I saw was on a late 60’s guy wearing a linen shirt, shorts and flip flops without a care in the world walking into the liquor store.

I’m a fan of the JM, out of my league but always liked that one.

Nice green dial but too overrated. Photos often enhance the green but physically it isn’t that beautiful.
When on the wrist, the Paul Newman dial is an absolute winner between the 2.

Since you're asking for opinions...

JM has taken on a cult of personality. For some reason unbeknownst to me. He is credited to popularizing otherwise unpopular watches, which IMO, were unpopular to begin with. They're mostly ugly, and merely hype. But now, suddenly, people love them. Again, cult of personality.

Also helps when you're a celeb with a blank checkbook.

As for the watch, it's yet another Daytona. Once you see one modern Daytona, you pretty much see them all. Just different materials used.

Not really when you consider the vintage daytonas are entirely built on the hype of being associated with Paul newman or to a lesser degree Steve McQueen. Rolex has been hype forever the new Daytonas are no exception. Vintage daytonas are way more hyped then the Mayer.

If I had the money to play in that level without being stupid I'd buy one. It looks gorgeous but there is no way.

Maybe consider the Green Dial Omega Moonshine Gold Speedmaster as a much more reasonable alternative? I think it is better looking than the "John Meyer".

Personally the WG/blue dial is in another universe - very beautiful.

I met a guy at Apple waiting at the Genius Bar who was wearing a JM and an Apple Watch on the other wrist. Didn’t look out of place, just incredible to see in the wild. His looked like he wore it all the time (his daily). Struck up a convo with him. Just salt of the earth 60-something simple guy who loved it.

I’d buy what you want. Nothing else will scratch the itch, if you truly have it.

Others making good ideas … buying pulling the trigger, you owe it to yourself to try on VC YG chronograph with green dial. You may love it more. I tried on VC WG perpetual calendar super-thin yesterday and it was truly special!

I am not a fan of full YG watches, but a John Mayer is the only one I would own. I have had it on my wrist and it is absolutely incredible. The problem is, of corse, the current price, since it is a hyped and discontinued watch.

If that money do not represent a great effort to you, do it. Otherwise, a WG blue dial is another great choice.

This combo is absolutely stunning. I believe it’s worth what the market will pay on many levels. It’s never going to be easily purchased and only going to get harder. It’s a grail watch for many.

I wouldn't thought the dial is the stand-out of the JM as far as making anyone look like a peacock. It's more the dazzling yellow gold. So I wouldn't have thought that the yellow-gold 116508 is an aesthetic compromise between the JM and a white-gold Daytona. I think if you feel peacocky in a JM, you'll feel peacocky in a 116508.

I have it, bought at retail thankfully… it’s a very special and different Rolex. The gold and the sunburst green go fantastically well together. I think its popularity will only grow increase with time. If you have the money go for it.
