^ great answer. I would only modify it slightly by saying you need some sort of "reasonable" purchase history, but not +$100 thousand. Money needs to have changed hands a few times for other Rolex models, and maybe another watch brand. Again, nothing crazy.

It's been 30-35 years since the Daytona was available to purchase in a display case as a walk-in, I wouldn't expect the trend to reverse in my lifetime.

Same here.... back in the day when there actually were chronological lists at ADs we had 10 or so ADs in my state and I had a relationship with a few of them and stood a chance of having my name come up on "the list" but alas... we only have 2 ADs left and there is no way I could get one at retail today, period! Not happening, unless a major spend history or a leveraged transaction that nets the AD market value.

I basically have given up.....

Best answer. It comes down to so many factors, but spend history is simply one. It’s similar to life: we work with and are more open to helping those that we connect with and like. Few want to acknowledge it, but personality and appreciation without an attitude of entitlement go so far in the search for grail pieces like this and the GMT BLRO. Most have no idea; instead when they are unable to make progress in their hunt, they go away claiming mistreatment when they just aren’t liked.

It was nice when there were family owned ADs. My relationship lasted 25+ years before Rolex pulled their account in 2020.

During that time I was allocated white and black steel Daytonas in both the zenith and 1st gen in house movements.

I fear the days of family owned ADs will be over before we know it.

Yes the Rolex Daytona it is available for retail RRP but your chance of getting one for RRP is about 0.0000000001%

Does anyone know what is the chances and what it actually takes to get one from an AD? I don't see myself buying one on the grey market for awhile, and wanted to know if it was even attainable. How long it usually takes and how much average you would have to spend?

Thanks in advance.
So so unlikely

Unfortunately and most older people here know this, Daytonas have almost never been easy to obtain. In 45 years, I’ve been offered 4, the first time I couldn’t afford it and I’ve purchased three of which I still own 2. One 18kt yellow gold and my 116500 white dial Daytona I’ve owned since 2016. Good luck OP…

126500 at retail here. About 6 months after initially expressing interest.

Reasonable spend history about 3X Daytona MSRP. Not bad as all watches/jewelry I wanted. This was mostly possible due to market. In the US, I expressed my interest in 2016 and I’m still waiting.

Define “obtainable”….

Obtainable if you have a great relationship with your AD and a nice amount of spend history, yes.

As a walk in or someone who buys something once every year or other year… 99.9% no.

Are you new to your local AD? If so, the chances of you able to get SS Daytona is 0.0000001%, unless you are buying 3 Daydate, 1 Sub gold and a few ladies datejust the next 2-3 years. Maybe then they remember you.

Yes, every Daytona ever sold was originally sold at MSRP.

Yes just buy a bunch of jewelry from the AD and they will give you a daytona. Easy peasy

Not sure if you’d consider some of the PM or
oysterflex daytona’s - those might be more obtainable from
AD and the cost would be similar to a SS on the secondary market.

Not necessarily the case. The last new SS Daytona that I purchased from an AD involved a required trade. They took a less than 1 year old 126610LN plus $20,000 for a brand-new black dial SS Daytona. This was in December 2021. I distinctly remember the conversation which was over the phone with nothing in email, text, or written as was my normal mode of conversation with them and it was a take it or leave it discussion. They dated the warranty card the same day.

They essentially leveraged market value out of the bnib Daytona and there was no way they were letting it go for MSRP. I guess that's why the "S" in MSRP stands for suggested!

I was about to write and 100% agree with WatchGuy1966's post, and then I saw yours! Very interesting on how your transaction was handled. I suspect there are a number of unique exchanges like this that frequently go on. Probably some Rolex "laws" broken there, but if both parties are happy, then I guess it's all good! Thanks very much for sharing. Glad you were able to get one of those coveted SS beauties!

Impossible to answer with any degree of certainty, but anything is possible. I did get my 11- and 12-series Panda at retail within the past 2 years, and candidly I am far from a VIP, but we do have a good rapport and they were earmarked for very special occasions. That said, given my spend level, I can't possibly expect the same outcome at a tier 1 city AD.

I'd like to echo the minority here. I also live in the LA area. I just got my white dial 126500 about a week and a half ago after expressing my interest in the Spring. I have a very modest spend history. I don't own a PM model and have never bought jewelry from my AD, so I think it's safe to assume that I'm far from a VIP. With that said, my family has shopped with them for about 10 years or so and I was able to give them a few referrals who were able to buy watches (all SS and TT Rolexes).

While spend history is important, I think having a good working relationship with your AD goes a long way.

SS Daytona in 2024... without any level of previous transaction is impossible 'period'.

A friend of mine is an AD owner, and I wouldn't even ask him if I could get it from him at retail. He needs to run his business and wants to sell other slower-moving stock or sell to those VIPs who supported his business. The cost of jewellers carrying other brands or jewellery, together with the rent, SA salary, and marketing, is a lot. They just don't stock enough SS Rolex Sports models to sell without bundling to other stuff. Even stocking in lady datejust would be a big inventory risk.

So why would an AD sell you a SS Daytona without any spending history, let alone a Batman, Pepsi, Starbucks or just a normal Sub. All the SS sports models are key in managing or reducing their inventory risk.
