Hi,

I wear my watches every other day so I occasionally need to manually wind them.

I was looking at my watch (SD 4000) this evening when I noticed that the Rolex coronet on the crown was upside down when it usually points up.

I unscrewed the crown and then turned it clockwise. It seemed to wind without any friction at all. Screwed it back and it ended up upside down again.

Unscrewed and pulled the crown all the way out. Then pushed it back in and now it seems to wind with a bit more friction than before.

I'm assuming that the winding mechanism has somehow got disengaged from the crown? Can it re-engage itsef or is there a fndamental problem? The watch is only 12 months old and so still covered by the Rolex warranty. Should I hack the movement and send it in to the Sydney RSC?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your crown is a 2 part springloaded afffair. When you push it in to wind it it disengages from the movement so you can screw it down, it has to be this way or you would not be able to screw it down without crushing the stem. Anywho from time to time the 2 part piece in you crown gets stuck so you have to pull it out to the 3rd position and just turn it back and forth to reset the crown then screw it in and you're good to go. If your crown is "upside down", whatever that means to you, when you screw it closed, then that is the way it will always be..

The threads on the crown and on the tube are cut into the metal and are permanent... they cannot be changed without replacement... and even then, they do not align a particular way.....
