Finally replaced my PC and re-did my office

I finally replaced my 8-year-old PC with a laptop and docking station. I don’t know why it took me so long to do this, but I can unplug the laptop from the docking station and take it anywhere I want. It’s wonderful. Also, I had to reboot my PC twice a day so it would be usable, and then it took 10 minutes to restart when I did so. Ridiculous.

My new laptop has 32GB of memory, 1TB SSD, and a clock speed of 2.0 GHz. I can’t believe how fast it is compared to my old pc. It’s like comparing a jet plane to a stagecoach.

I also used this as an opportunity to update my home office. And most importantly, I dusted under both desks. lol

Impressive. Looks like you should be signing legislation in there.

Looks great! I have been working on my home office for about two years, finally, I have it at a state to efficiently get my work done. There is so much to learn and it was all by trial and error. Examples: Using HDMI to DP converters, active vs passive. Docking station port limits, using the same manufacturer of equipment, like Dell laptop, Dell Docking station and Dell monitors, about 100 other things that I had to learn the hard way.

Yes, you need to be careful when trying to pair a laptop with a docking station. You can’t assume that an HP Laptop is compatible with all HP docking stations. Same applies to Dell. You can’t assume that every Dell Laptop is compatible with every Dell docking station. It’s really a pain in the a$$. You need to do a lot of homework and validate compatibility.

Also, now that I have everything working, I feel a need for more upgrades. I noticed my new laptop has a significantly higher quality display than the monitor I have. Better refresh rate, 4K capable, better overall picture quality. So now I want a new 4K, 27” monitor.

And while I’m at, I think it’s time for a mechanical keyboard and a new mouse.

You will like that more I think - especially in the long run.

It's definitely a nice office setup - when I saw your first post's pictures I hesitated making a comment. My immediate thought went to the off-axis use of the laptop keyboard - I thought that could cause some neck and trapezius pain.

Seeing this later post is the better path methinks.

Getting an outboard keyboard and mouse (or trackball) will let your body square-up with the large monitor. The ergo matters over time.

That is a self portrait of my daughter. She did that in high school. I hung it up on the wall, because I think it looks cool, but she’s much prettier than that in real life.

Thanks. When I was still on Facebook, years and years ago, I saw an ad for that and had to have it. I was always a huge Van Halen fan. Still am...

Very nice. If you have to work somewhere for 7 hours a day it might as well be in style

Completely agree. I went with the Logitech mechanical keyboard and MX master mouse (they also have in trackball if you prefer). Comparatively expensive, the keyboard was around $175 and the mouse $100, but well worth it IMHO. As someone pointed out, if you’re spending a lot of time in your home office might as well make it stylish and comfortable.

Looks nice! A person gradually gets use to a slower PC over time, but when they finally upgrade it's like a revelation. Enjoy your new office in good health. Cheers

Yes, that's the same baseball glove I used back in High School (believe it or not). It's one of the few things I have from when I was a kid. I was a mediocre pitcher on a mediocre team in a mediocre division. lol

The race car is a replica of a car my old company was a sponsor for. That was also a long, long time ago.

Funny, but I think I had the identical desk. If it is what I think it was a Kathy Ireland (yeah, the model) branded product.

You and me both. Guitars are my other obsession - been playing 45 years. EVH’s swagger is 2nd to none - I think I love his rhythm playing more than the lead stuff. Enjoy the great new space.
