Navitimer?

So is the Navitimer a watch designed for navigation, or is it a watch designed for Navy servicemen?

The watch is quite often found with a 'navy' blue dial but I don't know what it is like as far as water resistant properties are concerned?

The navitimer is a pilot watch that is used as an instrument for flight. The chronopraph can time flights or work as a stop watch for IFR patterns/holding patterns and the slide rule is used to calculate descent speeds ect.

The navi is not at all water proof, and would not even last in the shower.

I respectifully disagree with NavitimerNut regarding his comment "The navi is not at all water proof, and would not even last in the shower."

On the back of my watch case it says "ETANCHE 30M" meaning that it is waterproof to 30 meters.

In my owners manual it says:

"Important note: the chronograph pushpieces must not be actioned while the timepiece is under water.
Remember always to rinse the watch and metal bracelet carefully in fresh water after its every exposure to seawater."

Therefore, I can state with certainty that it is waterproof to a certain degree, assuming you are careful not to press on the pushers while the watch is wet.

I have worn my Navitimer (with rubber band) numerous times while swimming and have never had any problem whatsoever.

Err, depends on the model. My 806 Navitimer would mist up just from getting splashed while washing hands. There was no seal at all to prevent moisture getting under the bezel and into the watch.

BTW the Navitimer's main feature is the slide rule. It has conversions from Nautical Miles to Statute Miles to Kilometers along with the ability to do complex multiplication and division.

It was designed to help calculate fuel usage, flight times etc.

Fantastic watch.

Being a nut for complication watches, I love my Navitimer Olympus. In addition to the slide rule and chrono functions noted above, it's got a semi-perpetual calendar (only requires resetting once every 4 years).

Thanks for the information guys and the pictures too.

Those watches are sweet.

So is the traditional (original) quintesential Navitimer thought of as having a particular kind of style & colour dial.

I've seen some with arabic numbers, which look great, and some with like 24 hour dials too.

johnswatch: Sorry, you are probably correct in that waterproof or not depends on the model of Navitimer. Mine is a model 13022, purchased new in January 1999.

Here is photo of my Old Navi II . I would never let it touch water! Don't trust the whole rotating bezel and crystal seal.
