HELLO from a new member

Hello to all of you!
I have been reading the posts on this site and I must say I do find them both informative and entertaining.
I am really new (very very new) to the Rolex scene. The YachtMaster has been a tickler for some time but never gave it much thought before last week when I decided to go ahead with the 40mm TT YM with blue dial.
So about a week ago I started my quest for education on the subject of where and how to procur the timepiece.
I have read a lot on this forum (and others) on the gray market, AD's, Rolex USA, RSC's etc etc. (The power of the internet never seizes to amaze me; how did we ever manage to do business 10 years ago?)
I have decided (from a lot of input from your past posts) to purchase my first Rolex new and from an AD. Offers from reputable gray market dealers like A. Furman are tempting but for this one I will stick with the AD's.
Question to you all: Is 13% off list a decent discount for this watch this time of the year?
Thanks for your replies.

Ten years ago we had dealers and salesmen who took care of us in all levels of retail. Today if you want a watch you go to Wal-Mart and hope the saleslady speaks English and is not on her break. And then all she will do is put the watxch on the counter and stare at you like a common thief. And do not even ask her a technical question, hahaha!

As a society we have traded away service for a lower price, so we pick up the slack here. Because no one else is gonna watch out for us.

Hi and welcome. I would think a 13% discount is pretty good on the TTYM, but I'm a bit out of the loop.

Good luck and post pix when you get it.

As one Pete to another welcome to TRF well what I have heard about any discount from a American AD is welcomed, but if possible try for a bit more.

Welcome to TRF, Pete. Glad you joined our merry madhouse.

And 13% is not bad from a US AD these days. The best I've been able to do is about 10% and not on all models. I would say, if you want NIB from an AD, go for the 13%. Maybe you can get a bit more, but don't push too hard. How about mailing it out of state to save on the sales tax. That will get you a bit more off the total cost.

Hi Pete,

Welcome to TRF. 13% is not too bad. Try cash....it might get you an even better discount.

Cheers - JJ

100 m/330 ft. Although the YM is fitted with the TRIPLOCK crown, it is not officially rated as a DIVE watch, so it gets the standard 100 m rating like the other Oysters in the collection.

Agree with JJ, because of It's non-diver status Rolex limits the stated WR. I know one owner that had his tested the same as the 16610.

Thank you all for the warm welcome!
I feel good about this deal too; just dont know enough about this market yet. I felt a little "guidance" from TRF was in order.
I'll tell you though... deciding which one and hunting for it seem to be as good as getting it..
(I dont know if what I am saying makes sense but sure feels like it!)

BTW, thinking about the next hunt you mentioned before.. when I first saw the 16610 it did not catch my eye however the more I look at it now, I see it's beauty in it's ruggedness.

SeaGoer,

Welcome to the club, I just joined myself a couple of weeks ago and just acquired my 16610. Rolex's are like Harley's you have to have at least one of each and then you go on from there!! It's an expensive hobby but that's the fun of it also.

Pete, I meant to ask. Are you getting it from Liljenquist & Beckstead? If so, 13% is not bad from them.

I don't believe it is proper for me to disclose the name of the AD in a public forum without confering with them first; discounts appear to be a sensitive subject.
However, for the good of the TRF community, I can say that my situation does not seem to be unique. I took the time to visit two ADs; both of them gave me the exact same discount on this particular model.
My final choice of AD was not based on the financial aspect of the purchase. It was based on whom I like better and who I would like to continue doing business with.
Next time I go there I will inquire about disclosing the specifics and I will send you a pm. I hope you understand.
