1680 Case - Fake or not?

I would be interested in others opinions as to the whether or not this 1680 case is fake or real.

Based on a couple of factors I would say fake - but I have been wrong before.....

This auction is for a genuine vintage Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner 1680 watch case. It fits a 1570 calibre movement.

The case is in good condition. It has been polished but a few scratches and small dings remain. consistant with age. The bezel is missing, these are available on ebay and simply push into place. They are very easy to fit. It comes with the original dial,calendar disc ,ring bezel to hold crystal and hour and minute hands.The ring that hold the crystal is cracked ,dial and hands are not too good looking too but im including it anyway,these are available on ebay too.. Between the lugs it is marked "registered design 1680" and the other side has the serial 238xxxx.This is a no return item. What you see in this item is what you will get. The item will be dispatched the next working day after payment is received. No buy it now price. I am not affilliated with Rolex.

Been nice if he'd have better pictures of the case ends. Otoh, mine are worse. Not sure what you see wrong with it. The area between the crown guards is correct to my eyes.

I think the caseback is ok. Pics not the greatest. Here is a pic to compare...

I'd love to get a good close look between the lugs, but that usually gets me in trouble :-)

I am not only concerned with the caseback but the case also.

But look at the poor quality/ uneven stamping on the case back. Look at the height of the S in Montres in your example compared to the ebay listing. The ebay listing one is taller. The poorly formed R and O in Rolex. The missing bottom half of the S in Stainless. The quality and definition overall is very poor.

Now, on the case itself between the lugs the E's appear to have three equal length horizontal lines.

Then look at this sellers feedback and wonder how and why he now has a red sub case "This is a no return item" for sale.

To me it does not look right.

Do not loose track of the fact that our beloved Rolex has in the past farmed out the build of various components. And as was mentioned here a short time back that there have been several different methods used for the application of the serial numbers and model numbers to the case ends. Also, the light scribe work is visible on the inside of the case back that is placed by someone that has worked on the watch at some point in time. Is this a redial ? Good question !

Michael, I think he is guilty of some poor photography but the case/case back look genuine. The case is worn as it should be. The lettering and spacing of the font all appear proper, especially if compared to the other case back like the one Norm placed in this thread. Notice where the letters are in proportion to the letters above and below each one in both pics. They line up the same. The tool/mill marks that manufactured the case also appear as the same on both pics for the case backs.
