Best results for polishing out scratches?

Hello everyone, I have notices some small scratches on the sides of my Sea Dweller case. I have considered a Cape Cod cloth or a Dremmel with a polishing tip on low RPMs, but before I try anything, I wanted to have the benefit of your experience first.

Does the Cape Cod cloth leave a residue that could clog up and effect the helium escape valve? I have scratches on that side as well as the crown side.

I would be looking to restore the polished, mirror surface of this and other polished watch surfaces. The scratches I'm talking about are not big gouges, but the usual scratches.

Thanks very much,

Chris

I've got some fine hairline scratches in my SD and the cape cod cloth did absolutely nothing other than make them shiny.

My 2 cents: leave them alone. You will go into 'picture perfect' mode, polishing your watch daily, remember that polishing = removing some steel. As fellow members say, scratches give 'character' to your watch. Enjoy it!

Polishing removes steel????????
I just read that Rolex uses a 250 ton press to cut out an Oyster case because 904L is so hard.

JJ, I see that if someone wants to become your worse enemy, the only thing he has to do is to make some scratches in your watch!!!!

How do you think Cape Cod and other polishes 'remove' the scratch? By removing steel from polished surface.

Yes. That is why 18ct WG bands get very thin at the bottom over time.
Platinum will do it less but frequent polishing of SS can seriously fudge your watch. Im going to give my DJ one quick brush after 6 months with it with a cape cod when it comes. Since I have my LV, i need not wear the DJ frequently.

Solution to scratches on a high polish watch: but another watch thats not high polish to wear everyday :D
an excuse to buy a rollie

I was refering to the cloth that came with my Rolex, not the cape cod.

I use the 1 micron cloths from watchbrandnew (search ebay for those) then finish up with the cape cod cloths. For the brush finish on the bands I use the bergeon medium sanding bars from Otto Frei or the sanding bars found in knife stores...

All of these dont bring back the factory finish, but will take out the major scratches....

Wow... I just realized that I might be wearing the wrong watch...

The reason I wear my Subs / GMT IIs / Explorer IIs and my dearly beloved SD is because of how sturdy they are... they stand up to alot of abuse.

Next dent I get, I'll post a picture of. I mean I can definitely understand that some of you want your watch to look brand new and all that... I guess that's where I might differ.

I wear 'em and enjoy having them, but I won't take them off because I'm going to be doing something that might harm them or scratch them up or whatever... to me they're "watches". Not window dressing... Moreover, Rolex is a tool watch (at least the SS Prof models).

A couple of old sayings I like to keep in mind;

"Chicks dig scars"

"Scars are just tattoos with better stories..."

Al, it isn't stealing if it's freely given out my friend. A gal I know had a bad get off while racing the 125s at Sears Point a number of years ago... I remember her asking me what I thought of chicks with scars... that thought came to mind.
I honestly can't say if I heard it somewhere before, but it's become a sort of mantra for me.
