Lloyd,

I love the "distressed" look of your Sub
It shows that even though a Rolex has taken a beating, it still looks great.

Man - some beautiful examples of pristine dials. If mine had been as nice as some, I would have never had it replaced.

Here is my "new" vintage:

Great thread & pics guys, thanks for sharing.

My favourite has to be the 1956 DJ my son bought me for my 50th birthday last year.

Brendan,

Can't help noticing the beautiful, GMT II root beer dial that you have.

Realllly niiice!!

I am in a bit of a "toss up" between a TT GMT II root beer and the regular Pepsi dial.

Just how "rare" is the root beer dial? I know that your piece is the "nipple dial" correct? I am not sure how current is the production. But just curious as to how many pieces Rolex makes compared to the regular SS versions.

Thanks for the compliment!

Just to make sure we are on the same page, my watch is a GMT Master circa 1971. I am pretty sure the "nipple dial" did not ever come on the GMT II (see pic below). In terms of numbers and ratios, I wouldn't even know where to find those statistics, maybe someone else on here would. I know prince just acquired a rootbeer GMT II and is really excited about it, he might be able to give you a little more information on the GMT II production years, etc.

One thing I do know is that I was able to choose between the brown bezel and a TT bezel - obviously I chose the brown, but of course that is probably a personal preference type of thing. I'm not sure if the GMT II ever came with the brown bezel option (except maybe the all 18K) - maybe someone else would know.

My GMT dial:

The GMT II dial:

Any other questions, let me know!

Brendan,

Yes, you are quite right. I do know that the nipple dial is vintage, but was not sure whether it extended to the GMT II.

Well, now I know, thanks for enlightening.

The piece that I am eyeing is the TT GMT II root beer dial, in root beer bezel too. And TT oyster bracelet.

No need to knock yourself on the head about that - I just recently learned the name "nipple dial".

The one you are looking at sounds really nice!!! - I want to get a oyster bracelet too so I can switch around as the mood suits - hunting right now for one.

Feel free to use the Rootbeer club signature once you get it - happy to see more coming into the club. When I came to this forum, I felt sure I would be in the minority. Love to see some pics of it!

Good luck with the acquisition
