Date Just for Exploring?

Well, looking at getting a date just in place of my explorer 1. Really liked the Exp 1 and gave to my father, but I do like having a date. Seems to me a SS plain bezel Date Just is just about the same as an Explorer 1, just as rugged. Like how the date alternates fro mred to black and the Rolex Crown is at the 12 O Clock. Very traditional. Anyone have any thoughts on the new pyster bracelet. Does not have the safety clasp, but seems like it would be very difficult to come off. If I get, I will wear for swimming, travel, and some serious hiking.

The new Rolex Oyster DateJust's are great. Tried on about a half dozen different styles last weekend.

Hi there

As far as I know, about the DATEJUST:

The Oyster Case:
All Stainless Steel Datejusts, are made of, the some of the hardest steel in the watch world. The waterproof lock-mechanism on the crown, glass, caseback, makes it submersable to at least 50 meters. (If you wan't to go much deeper, consider any Rolex divers series).

The Glass:
A new(er) Datejust will have Sapphire glass. It is considered unscratchable, but not unbreakable, and it can chip too.
A vintage Rolex (approx. pre 1990) will have an acryllic glass. Though this can scratch pretty easy, it will not break or chip. The scratches can be easily buffed out in minutes.

The Movement:
The 3035/3135 movement, is about as shock proof as a non-quartz watch movement gets. This particular movement is also used in the toolwatches (Seadweller, Submariner, Yacht-Master), and has stood the test of time, the test of diving, the test of climbing Mount Everest, and so on, many times.

So if you wan't a somewhat dressy watch (non-tool-watch), I really don't think you can do must better than a DATEJUST.
I chose a (vintage) Datejust myself for the above reasons, and I will never regret it...

The bracelet:
I own a jubilee, and although it is very nice built (and very beautiful), I wouldn't trust it hanging off a cliff. I would however trust the oyster any day...
Talking about straps I would like to mention that a nato has saved a watch I once owned. The problem with any bracelet is, that it "only" takes a (very hard) pull to twist it off the case where the lugs are attached. This means that if one of the little pins fail, you will drop your watch. If you use a nato however, the watch itself will stil be attached to the nato with the other pin.

If you choose the more dressier jubilee, you could/should therefor consider to change to a nato strap when you do your extreme adventures

I think I have used up my time now

black faced SS DJ with luminous hands, markers and that smooth bezel would be a great watch...

We're big fans of the black dial DJ around here... Me, Mikey and Klein55 all own black dial DJ's... and then Alex has the vintage black dial Date... I'm waiting on my smooth bezel to come in - swapping the fluted one out - going for that clean, uncluttered look...

So anyone put their Datejust through extreme test? Worn them swimming, traveling, exploring, outdoor activites, etc... I have seen one or tw here on the forum that looked pretty beat up. How did they hold up? Think there would not be much difference between Exp 1 and a datejust.
