I had placed my Datejust in a jewelry box the other night and when I took it out the next day I found a small magnet from a lapel "pin" had attached itself to the back of the case. The watch was running 5 minutes fast. Since then, the watch runs about 20 seconds fast each day. What did the magnet do to the watch to make it run fast? Thanks!

Hair spring could have been tangled. You can bring to your AD / watchsmith to do the untangling. From what I hear, shouldn't take that long.

I doubt the hairspring is "tangled" from the magnet but if the spring is magnetized the coils can stick together, reducing the spring length and making the watch run fast. However, but then I would expect it to run much faster that +20 per day. More like + minutes per day.

Cure is simple - take to to the local watch repair guy and have them demagnetize it. Only takes a few seconds, and does not require opening the watch. If it still runs fast, time for it to be serviced.

Well first cannot see how a magnet could attach to the case back because its made from S.steel.But if your watch was put in a strong magnetic field, the movement balance spring could become magnetised .Now normally a magnetised watch will run very very erratic indeed,and gain several minutes but its simply fixed by have watch demagnetised.But in your case IMHO your watch just need a service or just simple regulating.

hard to believe a lapel pin magnet had the strength to do what you described but, with the types of magnets available today it's possible as Padi said the internal main spring could become magnetized and speed up your watch.
