Isn't this 6542 Bakelite just an amazing watch? Love the bezel and the dial is perfect!! Amazing how time can be preserved--literally in this case!

Since we are in the 50's --one more-How about this wild caramel dial 5508? What a trip--not too many crazy dials like this one with a nice unpolished case. I just love these vintage watches--they are a very bad habit!!

Ken, that 6542 is to die for. I see lots of 6542's with issues like cracked bakelite bezel inserts or messed up dials. That one is great. As for the habit that we share, perhaps Peter Cetera of the band Chicago said it best, "You're a hard habit to break."

Hello Connor!!
You surely have a very bad habit, which will be difficult to cure!

That no guards GMT is a beauty. Very few original bezel survive, part due to their fragility, part because they were recalled by Rolex, due to nuclear contamination claims on some batches, it seems, as I have read somewhere.

By the other hand, this "caramel" dial on your 5508 is just awesome!

Enjoy your beauties in good health, and thanks for sharing!
Cordial regards, Abel.

Hello Abel-
I agree--and wish the caramel dial 5508 was mine! It is so unique--never seen another one quite like it! It belongs to a friend who is willing to sell it to me though! We shall see....

There are people who could contemplate selling body parts for for a vintage piece like that!

That Bakelite GMT is a stunner for sure! It's amazing the condition its in!

It's an understatement to say that your friend is a "lucky guy" with those two watches, among what I assume to be many more fine examples!

Okay maybe a newb question here but why is it called "Bakelite"? I'm guessing it has something to do with the insert

It is the bezel insert--a synthetic plastic compound developed by a Belgian chemist named Dr. Leo Baekeland in early 1900's.
