I remember reading somewhere, don't recall where, that if install a NATO strap you should change to a different spring bar. I have a 16610. Is this true?

No... The NATO does not care what springbars you use..

However, keep in mind that the military watches intended for a NATO style strap did not use spring-bars at all, but had solid bars welded in place.

I would always use the standard springbar but some NATO style straps are thicker than others and can be quite tight to fit. This might be why some use a slightly thinner springbar but I wouldn't recommend them.

I understand the military solid bars. That is why I thought I read something about getting thicker spring bars.

I guess my memory relapses are showing my age.

Lets be clear, the NATOs are thin and can be used with exsisting 16610 spring bar; can be 'threaded' thru without having to remove the bar...

The ZULUs or formerly, Rhino straps are thicker material and CAN be used with the 16610 spring bar, however, it is difficult to thread these straps; negating 'removal' of the spring bar (or at least one end de-pinned) - placing the ZULU or Rhino approximately where you want it, and then re-seating the bar...
