leave iit or fix it?
bought a Breit Chono Cockpit (2nd hand) a few months ago for $1300.
A few weeks ago it stopped for unknown reason (no drop or anything) 3rd repair shop finally found the problem, and its thrashed. $700 or so to fix it... Should I write it off or get it fixed? Bear in mind I will have to pay out the $700 in installments because I do NOT have that laying around.... |

Do yo know of a good independent watchmaker that you have used before? Can try and ask him to do what he needs to do to get it running but you accept the risk if it fails . Either way at this point I don't think you have much to lose. If he says no he says no and it's up to you but it is a nice watch. I am not an expert on watchmaking in anyway but things can sometimes be done. Cheers

I had myBreitling 785 and a Pierre Cardin vintage serviced by him , happy with his work and pleasantly surprised by his pricing. You could ask for more references for him on breitlingsource.com too where he is highly recommended!

Craig, on more than one occasion, has told me how he doesn't care to work on the Valjoux 7750. So, not needing a ton of bricks to fall on my head, I don't send them to him anymore. It's a fairly simple movement to fix for the knowledgeable watchmaker but it's better if you see a lot of them. You can buy new replacement movements for around $350 so it would be a cold day in hell before I'd pay $700 to fix one.

Just to clearify, its the modified ETA 2XXX movement that I will not work on (sub registers at 3, 6 and 9 and the date window is usually at 4:30). I don't like to work on the Valjoux/ETA 7750 but I do service them (the sub registers are at 6, 9 and 12 and the date window is usually at 3:00). I have recommended the complete replacement of the 7750 movement on 2 or 3 chronos in the past 10 years as a less expensive repair solution to repairing the customers old movement. If the one in question has bad gears, I would recommend replacement. Bad gears could be a sign of a lot of other bad parts and a very expensive repair. Craig aka Chronodeco
