GMT 6542 Advise
I am thinking about taking the plunge on a GMT 6542. But before doing anything would love to get some advise and to see if anything can see anything wrong with these images.
Dealer has admitted bezel is aftermarket, but that the rest is orginal- I think I can live with that, but would love to get feedback too |

At a quick look .....
Am just out the door for work so only a cursory look. But I'm seeing ...
* Service dial * Incorrect hands possibly - don't seem to be the correct gilt issue to me * Something quirky about the inside case-back perhaps EDIT: I think the case-back is OK. * After-market bezel perhaps - doesn't display any of the typical brassing * Definitely an after-market insert (as stated by the seller). Nice enough for a fake Bakelite though * Freshly refurbished case loses points for me * Cant tell from your pics if the bracelet's any good A bit of a gap between the case-back date (IV/57) and where the case serial number sits on most charts (around III/58) You get that sometimes though - could be ok. I haven't looked on chrono24 to see where the price sits but it's certainly a flawed 6542. Should be priced accordingly. |

All the charm of these is the gilt dial and Bakelite. None of which this has. I wouldn't

The 2nd watch is the same ..... but different
The second watch also has a service dial but it's a gilt one so earlier and a bit closer to the original.
Relumed plots perhaps but I'm just guessing from those pics. Once again, seems the watch has lost its original gilt hands. Once again, the bakelite insert has gone but the fuchsia coloured fat font insert is a nice replacement. Difficult with those pics to determine the condition of the case - very polished perhaps I'd be wanting to see decent macro pics of each lug. Here's a Google pic of a (supposedly) unpolished 6542 for comparison. |
