Looking for my first Rolex Submariner.

Hi guys

I've been looking around a long time for a Rolex submariner.
It's my first sub , I already have an GMT black and gold (vintage) .
I've been looking mostly around the 5512 and the 1680-0-00
I prefer the vintage look on these Rolex,
But I can't really decide

Just looking for some tips and recommendations on my first submariner and I appreciate all the response you guys are giving me .

Two great books that I can recommend to you (and everyone here) as great beginner's resources are Vintage Rolex Sports Models by Martin Skeet and Nick Urul, and Collecting Rolex Submariner by Guido Mondani.

I found Vintage Rolex Sports Models to be a great book for the beginner, because it provides a very good, solid foundation that will teach you the fundamentals of Rolex Submariner evolution. . .along with the same for other sports models, such as the closely-related Sea Dweller, and the Explorer and GMT. Mondani's book is a great second book for the "advanced" beginner to pick up alongside, or right after, finishing Vintage Rolex Sports Models.

Finally, ask plenty of questions. If you're considering purchasing a certain Submariner, by all means, post pictures or a link to here, and ask members for their critical review and opinions. People here are very helpful, and its way better to learn something is wrong with a watch before you buy it, than after! Over time, you'll find yourself also developing a very critical eye for the watches, and an ability to separate the good from the bad.

5513 meters first ?
Very clean dial, simply back to basics and extremely vintage

5513 and 1680? Whats the uppside and downside with these?

I've recently bought my first Rolex which is a white 1680 sub.

As far as I'm concerned there are no down sides. It is pretty much my daily wearer and copes just fine.

I suppose the only downside is that this model does not have a quick date set - that didn't come in until the 16800 so if you plan on wearing on and off then it might get a little annoying when it comes to setting the date.

To confirm, the only way to set the date is to wind the hands round and round past each 24 hours to click over the date wheel.
If that is a biggie for you then maybe the 5513 or 5512 would be better.

The other main difference between the early 16800 and the 1680 if you weren't aware was the 16800 has a sapphire crystal. Later 16800s had a gloss black dial with luminous markers which loses some of the vintage appeal.
