How to distinguish the 2 versions of the newest Submariner blue?

Hello all,
I am in the hunt to find a 116613 Submariner, 2tone blue.
When this model came out a few years ago, I did NOT like the "powder" shade of blue that was released.
Then a few months ago at the AD, I checked out the updated model, with the darker blue "sunburst" dial.
Of course, I loved it.
Now, looking around online for deals, I find it very hard to tell if the 116613 I'm looking at is the darker. Of course, the lighting of the picture can make the powder dial look darker.

My question - is there anything on the model number (warranty card) or by serial number, that would indicate for sure that it's the newest sunburst?

Or do I just have to take the seller's word for it? And sometimes they don't know the difference (unaware there are 2 dials for this model)

There is nothing on the warranty card, as they are the same models. The serial numbers are all random now, and even the NSA hasn't broken the code yet.

Find a seller that knows what they are selling! Good luck in your hunt on a beautiful Rolex!

Anything that's a letter serial and not a random is guaranteed to be powder (ie v)

When it comes to random serials it's up to you to ask the seller.

Ask the seller for some outside pics taken in direct sunlight. The sunburst dial will typically exhibit a cool 'streak of light' when photographed in the sun.

Here is the predecessor model, the 16613 'bluesy', but the effect will be the same on the new sunburst version of the 116613 ceramic watch.

Be careful because sellers will still call the older flat smurf blue "The New Blue"..I find a lot of people have no clue about which blue dial is which...The best bet is to see it in person to be safe.

After all it is a major investment....

You should be able to tell from the pics which dial is which. At least the ones I've seen for sale here I can tell by the great pictures that are taken from the seller. Good luck on getting your TT sub. That new sunburst dial is stunning!!

This really shouldn't be a problem. First rule of buying used (or new for that matter) is buy the seller, then the watch. If the seller doesn't know what he's selling - big red flag. And if the pictures aren't good enough for you to tell for sure what it is - another red flag. If somehow there was still some sort of miscommunication and you received the wrong dial, a reputable seller would take it back and immediately refund your money.

I also got my sunburst through DavidSW. That, or one of the other recognized trusted sellers here, is the way to go. They will shoot straight about what they are selling.

I might add that if the seller didn't know the difference, I would stay away.

thanks for all the advice - I did contact a couple well established sellers here on the forum, and they did know the difference (but didn't have one in stock right now).
There where several online resellers that did not - and these where very well known sites, suggested by fellow members here.
I'm going to keep looking - I'm sure someone will get one in soon...
