1964 Daytona!!

Guys, just seen this on ebay and was intrigued, description is :
1964 Rare and Vintage Rolex Cosmograph Daytona silver black dial

The dial is 100% original and untouched in good condition with original hands. The dial is a rare early variant without the word "daytona"

The case is original and in overall good condition. The serial and model numbers are visible between the lugs.

The cal. 72B is running properly and keeping time. All functions set and re-set properly. The last service is unknown, so one could be needed.

The watch comes on swiss made riveted oyster bracelet with 57 end pieces 1969 on the clasp with some stretch.

I also have the serial number: 1196025

Can anyone comment on authenticity, Ive posted in vintage as well!!

1) lug engraving is ok
2) dial is a quite rare variant ( cream or " soleil " satinated and no DAYTONA ) with 2nd style of fonts ( same you have in 6262 and in later 6239/6241 ) ; by the way not often seen ....
not sure if it's the pristine dial ..
3) case is from around the middle of 1965
4) some hands have been replaced
5) case is in medium conditions
probably also the crown is a later replacement ( but a side pic would be necessary )
would be interesting to see also the movement .

I have no vintage experience, but I like the look.

Hands also appear to perhaps have been re-lumed (?), and the lume dots at 3, 4 and 6 have fallen off. Neither of which are huge problems, I think, just little observations.

seller has 0 feedback. id live to try and buy this for under $10,000 but nothing is ever free....why would a legitimate seller sell a daytona like this, on ebay, with zero feedback?

1.196m serial which dates to 1959 and he says it is a '64? feels like a scam. if it is too good to be true, it usually is.

Thanks guys ! Spoke to the guy and sounded dodgy straight away! It was a gift and he couldn't remember where he took it to to get authenticated. Bank transfer only!! Needless to say a massive swerve!

The watch in the pics is genuine imo. Some of the online year by serial guides do date it to 1964.

However....

I also spoke to seller and he said it had belonged to his Father In Law who had owned it from new and he was looking for the papers now too. I asked for extra pics of crown side and movement but they have not been sent.

The missing lume dots on 3 and 4 would be a deal breaker for me but to each their own

I fear for who ever buys this. I don't doubt the pics are of a legit watch. I do however doubt the seller since he has no feedback and has told two perspective buyers two different origin stories for the watch.

When you are seeing pictures of all the pieces that have been taken off and spread out, you have no way of knowing if any of those parts were ever in the same watch..

By the way, if it doesn't say Daytona, it isn't; it's a Cosmograph. Daytona wasn't put on the dial until around '62, and was spotty for the next few years. It's a common term now, but back then the Cosmo was a hard sell and Daytona was painted on dials to get interest from the, then new, NASCAR crowd..

Everyone has a right to their opinion but you get what you pay for. The Daytonas that sell quick are the ones in immaculate condition. You pay a premium but it is worth it as I have owned a beauty in the past. Vintage purchases are scary so I prefer to pay for peace of mind from Andrew Shear and others mentioned on the sticky.

Agreed but in this case it sold for about $9000, a lot less than market value....as i said....if it was legit.

Those photos are Andrew Shear's photos, for sure. If you are buying from anyone but him, you aren't getting a watch.
