Selling Rolex on Gumtree may not be the best idea..

"

Police are hunting a thief who robbed a man of his $20,000 Rolex watch during a meet up in Melbourne arranged through the online marketplace Gumtree.

Very sad, and very serious.
I hope the robber gets the maximum punishment possible.
This is not just theft, but robbery where the taking of the watch is used with a weapon (screwdriver).

Rolex thief in Melbourne

Just came across this story about a Rolex Daytona stolen from a private seller in Melbourne.

Probably considered newsworthy mainly because a Rolex was involved, but all the same, a salient reminder to exercise caution when buying and selling privately.

Very bad news - especially as a weapon was involved

Agreed.

In my opinion, very wise move to give up the chase when the weapon was produced though.

I totally agree that this is a serious matter and I hope the culprit is dealt with harshly.... That said, I'm not sure I'd use Gumtree to sell a $20k watch.

All the horror stories you read about fakers and setups on Gumtree/Craigs List/etc - why risk it when there's a plethora of real forums with people interested in buying these kinds of things?

Apologies, didn't realise a thread on this topic already existed.

I checked, but obviously not hard enough!

Craigslist is just as bad. You really must use some common sense which a lot of people don't.

Oh man, and they had wanted the money because they are expecting a child and wanted to put it away for the future...that is terrible.

How do you live with yourself after doing something like this to your fellow man?

Best place to do a transaction is at your bank with an armed guard.

Banks in Canada don't have guards. Much less guns.

Can't imagine doing a FTF without being armed....your telling someone you don't know you'll have 20k in your hand with a time/date/location. Crazy.

If I wanted to sell any of mine, I'd ask one of the ADs that I use for a recommended pre-owned watch dealer. I might lose out on a few quid (bucks) here or their but it would be a much safer.

Kinda impossible in just about every civilized country. USA would be an exception.

Hi Stavrodos,

Did the seller seriously expect a buyer to roll up to the Doncaster shopping centre with $20000.

Or was he going to take a cheque?

Anyway they should catch the thief - he gave his name as Johnny.
