I need guidance

I am far from a pen nut, in fact the best pen I own is a Parker roller ball that runs $60.

I write insurance appraisals on firearms 10-20 times a year. Some of these firearms are valued in the 100's of Thousands. I use a nice stationary but would like to sign off on these with a bit nicer pen. I am thinking a fountain pen because you can see the character in it's writing and the signature looks more elegant. My issue is $. It doesn't make sense to spend $1000+ on a fountain pen to use 10-20 times a year for 5 mins or less each time. I am sure I will have ink drying issues too between uses. I cannot use one for my daily pen (though I would like too) because I spend the day writing on triple carbon copies. That said I am also looking to purchase a nice roller ball that writes well in a fine line for my daily use pen. At the moment I use Uniball vision elite micro pens, but something nicer and not disposable would be nice.

Any advice and guidance is appreciated.

A couple points, you don't need to spend $1,000 on FP to get a very nice writing pen. Best thing is to go to store that sells them and try several to see which works best and fits your style. For my signature I like a med nib, and for editing docs I like a Sailor ($150'ish) fine nib FP which allows me to write in margins, between lines etc.

As far as long waits between usages, Here are a couple idea's:

1. Use pen with cartridges and take out after each use and clean pen.
2. Just rinse nib morning before use to get ink flowing, I use this method successfully.

I have buddy that collects Purdy's and Holland & Hollands.

Thank you! Unfortunately I live in rural NC and have no such stores near to me. I would not have an issue spending $500 so long as it is a good pen that will retain some value (I know that the roller balls I might consider do not retain value well regardless.)

Thanks for the tips and Purdy and Holland both make wonderful firearms that I truly enjoy working on.

I'd consider something like a Waterman Carene. It's in the 200 range and comes in various colors and has a unique nib (which you may like or may not). It does come with cartridges and a converter so in that way it is versatile. While you may not be able to completely get rid of your rollerball for the carbons, you may find that you use the FP more than you think. Then in that case, you can always upgrade.

Any thoughts on Delta. I found a great looking nib from 2004 special limited edition indigenous people. I am digging it from the pics. I am also digging the Montblanc daniel defoe writers edition roller

How bout a Montblanc fountain pen. They start in the $4XX-$5XX range new and can be had for even less pre-owned via TRF or eBay.

I don't see many coming across TRF. I wouldn't know enough to feel safe on ebay and hate to join a new forum like "fountainpennetwork" just to buy a piece or two with only a mild interest.

It's about the joy of being able to hold, appreciate and use a delicate piece of functional art.
Don't forget to check fountainpennetwork, fpgeeks for info and also good P2P deals for used/new pens of all kind.

Edit: i did not realize that you had already checked out the fountainpennetwork. Thats all i could recommend. I don't feel comfortable with sites like ebay and etsy for luxury items. For a person of limited knowledge, it's a mine field out there.

If you want a nice FP that will enhance your signature / writing I would suggest that you consider a MB, Parker, or Shearer with an oblique nib. The oblique will add a LOT of character to your signature along with a lot of ink shading.

Thank you all. I did end up buying a nice nos delta special limited edition indigenous people fp with 18k nib. It was delivered today and I should have ink tomorrow. I am sure I will end up with more fountain pens as time goes on and I increase my business and can step away from my 9-5. In the meantime I am still interested in finding a good day to day use rollerball or I could consider a ballpoint as long as it is a capped one.

Congrats. I am in the market for a MB fountain at the moment. Not sure which one yet. I have a fleet of Lamy Safaris and have really developed a fondness for using a FP all of the time. Plus the look on my kids faces when they grab one of dad's pens is priceless.

If I hadn't gotten the deal I got on the delta, I was looking at the mb daniel defoe fp. I may still get it and a good chance I will get the rollerball if I can find it.
