I see (apparent) 5501 dials featuring both Air King and Explorer markings.

Is this an error or did this reference really feature both dials?

There were both dials and it is one of the most faked watches because of the fact. Many Air kings have become explorers since the explorer tends to bring more in the marketplace. Ill have to find the reference but there is a way to tell a true explorer from a redialed air king.

I love these obscure references. Any idea why this may have been done? I can't imagine the rationale behind this.

I looked at it too quick before I made my statement. I meant to say the 5500 is commonly swapped to the explorer dial. Its more of the sport model as compared to the two tone 5501. Same watch though for the most part.

The Air King Date and Explorer Date also shared SS and TT ref numbers (5700 and 5701).
