Breaking the Montblanc trend. Nakaya content!

Just wanted to share my two beauties. Both are Nakaya in a long cigar shape.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1467304042.155752.jpg

The left is in the above pic is aka-tamenuri urushi lacquer and the right is shu urushi lacquer. Both have medium (.4mm) 14k nibs and are amazing writers.

Thanks for letting me share!

Edit: I didn't realize how crappy the other pics I have are until I looked on the computer! I'll take some more and post.

Nice pens! Urushi is fairly new to me. Seems like a really interesting material after reading up on it.

I have a Nakaya in Dark Burl with an 1.1 italic nib and it is superb!

Nakaya is a pen company extraordinaire! No doubt! When you begin to delve into the world of tamenuri urushi lacquer you are entering the world of all things "complete"!

There is not another company better at what they do than Nakaya!

My Compliments! Just............ incredible craftsmanship and artisans.

Richard

Thanks all. After having all plastic pens up to this point, the urushi has an amazing feel and I'll never go back.

Those pens are really beautiful pieces of art as well as great writing instruments. Someday when I grow up I'd love to purchase a fine Fountain pen from Nakaya!!!

Thanx for sharing.....Leo

The ink is actually one I mixed myself. It is a blue black with a lavender tint.

I took about 10% of MB black ink and mixed in about 70% Delta Blue. Then about 20% Noodlers purple.

So about mixing inks, I've done this by mixing a 50/50 fill of J. Herbin emerald of chivor with their bleu ocean in an effort to get the red highlights of emerald of chivor but make the green a more convincing blue. We can't use green ink where I work for documents. What I've read is you don't want to mix alkaline inks with acidic and sometimes mixing inks will clog the pen. This mixing thing is all new to me but I really like the idea to get exactly the color desired like you've done above. Is there a guide or do you have some advice on the issue??

I plan to start mixing ink(s) as well. I really love Diamine's "Ancient Copper", but I don't like the way it writes as much as my beloved Iroshizuku inks. I have Iroshizuku tsukushi (horsetail) and fuky-gaki (winter persimmon) at home and I really think they's make a bad ass color when mixed. I just don't have a clean method of transferring inks in and out of bottles yet. Maybe a project for this weekend.

No... no guide except my gut and eyeballs. I don't really pay a lot of attention to the alkaline / acidic contents as most inks today are non-acidic unless you are going into the world of India or "Bulletproofs". Careful with intermixing those.

The issues that I run into is that if you mix a cheaper ink with one more expensive I have noticed that the ink will thicken over time. I just mix / stir / shake it hard and strain it through some cheesecloth and call it good. If it comes out to light in color then you know it's time to retire it as the pigments have coagulated. Therefore it is good not to do too much at a time. Use some of the ink sample tubes that are around on Ebay and other sites and mix small amounts.

https://smile.amazon.com/Conical-Bot...s=sample+tubes

It is one of the best parts of writing. Ink. The flow, shading (especially with italic, stubs, and obliques), colors. If you are looking for a color you don't have and your current collection of inks have a good mix of prime colors, you can always try mixing. I have some eyedroppers and ink syringes that I use so you can really get macro about it.

Thanks for the input!

Just pick up some eyedroppers or even better yet the syringes. I have both and they wash up clean after use.

I just spent a couple hours researching and determining what Nakaya I like the best, short of a decapod raden now the good and bad news is I found the pen I like the most out of their line.........in stock........no waiting I would prefer a 1.1stub I think but I could always go for a nice springy nib. Probably in a broad to match a European medium line width from what I understand of Japanese nibs. This is bad. I can feel my wallet getting hot right now must resist!

A 1.1 stub / italic is the literal best nib you can call your own in my never to be humble opinion!!!

Love it! Enjoy!

I've never had an italic but I do have a few stubs. How is the Italic as far as scratchiness? I might start a separate Nakaya thread in a bit. I'm seriously thinking about doing this now. I lost a bid for an Omas green Arco this morning so I guess it's justifiable right??

Just relax and know that a 1.1 italic nib FP regardless of the manufacturer will serve you well. And they are smooth!

I have several dozen of these. Love them all!

I have a range of Nakaya nibs in cursive italics, stubs and unmodified and all have been great to use. I have straight "M" and "B" as well as an "M" that was modified to cursive italic by John Mottishaw (nibs.com) and also a double broad he modified to a stub that is without a doubt one of the best nibs I have even found.

On the left is the cursive italic and stub on the right:

A standard "B" on a Kikyo Portable Writer:

And a Music nib on the Kikyo Piccolo:

There is also an "M" nib on a heki-tamenuri Portable Writer but I don't seem to have a picture of it handy.
