Icon5 1570 Second Hand Sweep

I recently bought a Rolex 1601 with a 1570 movement, I could not help but notice that the second hand seems to stutter a bit, I was wondering if it is just my watch or is it common for the 1570 movements to not be as smooth sweeping. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ryan and welcome. The 1570 was a movement that had a lower frequency. I believe it was at 6 beats per second (21,600 bph) as compared to 8 in more modern movements. Clearly the less beats per sec will lead to a more staggered look as the second hand sweeps.

The movement is famous for it's reliability, here's a link to an earlier thread on here which in turn links to some interesting info.

Ya, I saw that site it has some really good pictures of the movement, I also found out that the 1570 is 19,800 BPH, but I'm not sure that causes the increased stuttering.

Jonesy is quite correct, the lower beat rate than current models is one of the reasons why the second hand moves with a little more stopping and starting than flow.
However, the 1570 should not be thought of as being inferior by any means, they are excellent movements for sure.
I'm glad you got a 1601 DJ as they are really good watches that make great buying value. I have mine and it has gone through a lot, but still runs like a beaut at the end of the day.

If the second hand moves only 6 times per second instead of 8 times per second it is going to appear to be stopping and starting more often as it has less flowing effect over that one second time period. Assume there was only one movement (vibration) per second, it would look even less to be of a flowing nature than a second hand which makes 6 or 8 movements (vibrations) over the same period and the second hand travelling the same distance.

Here's 6 beats per second:

And here's 8 beats per second.........That's a 33 percent increase in speed..
