Assuming the two are priced similarly, then one way to look at it is this:

1) With the YM, you're paying for some platinum (a precious metal) which raises its intrinsic value while with the GMT, you're getting some ceramic (perhaps not as precious);

2) With the GMT, you're getting a new, upgraded movement and possibly a better bracelet and clasp;

3) The resale value of the YM is lower than the GMT because bezel replacement is expensive if badly scratched;

4) The YM is "dressier'' while the GMT is "sportier''.

I own the YM (bought in 2002) and plan to get the GMT before the end of the year, so I think both are great buys.

Ultimately, the decision will depend - as many have said before me - on which of the two "sings'' to you?

I'm wearing my platinum/SS YM right now.

I noticed a lot of people prefer the GMT II because of its more modern features, but I don't know if that's important to you or not.

Get the watch that you want to wear every day.....

Don't let a bunch of opinionated forum tramps pick it for you..

(The GMT is probably the most versatile Rolex ever made)

Both great watches but GMTIIc would be my 1st, if not just because of the new clasp over the Plat.

Plat would make a stunning pair as #2

I'd choose the Platty over the GMT IIc..but that's just me. I had many chances to get the GMT IIc in the past year....but passed up on it every single time. During that span, I have purchased a Milgauss, Coke GMT II, Sub LV, SD, SS Daytona..etc. Don't get me wrong, I do like it (as well as every other Rolex model), but in no hurry to get one now since it just came out in 2007. Btw, I like the TT version more than the SS...

I also own a Platty, purchased in 2002. It gets the most wristtime because it's a perfect blend of Sport, Dress, and BLING!!

My personal choice would be for the GMT IIc.
As I have owed one before, its a very nice looking watch, but just be mindful of the polished links & clasp.

GMT was my first! Wearing it right now. I do love it. I also have the platty - I love it - It is probably me least used Rolex.

Both are great but you are starting to see more and more of the new GMT's out there. The YM's are less common which I like...plus it's a little more "bling". If you are buying new or for resale considerations...GMT, pre-owned YM. Just my opinion....buy what you like best...
