Novice Question - Please help!

I have the opportunity to purchase a 1940's Bubbleback Oyster Perpetual (California Dial) (see photo) from a reputable dealer here in Chicago. However, after a few image searches online, I have noticed that most that I have found come with the "mercedes" hands. The one in question does not, however the dealer claims that all parts are original, except for the band.

Any information would be helpful before I purchase...thanks!

Hi and welcome. If you can get better pictures it would help. A lot of these watches are re dials so be careful. Also the dealer could be correct in saying they are all original Rolex parts but they may not be correct to that watch.

It needs an expert in that particular era of Rolex watchmaking to give you a better idea.

It's almost impossible to tell anything from that picture.

But I will agree that those hands seem to be inconsistent with a 1940's era watch of that style..

Hard to say...

You need a good reference such as J Dowlings "The Best Of Time" that has some pictures of early references..

all early bubble backs do not have Mercedes hands, just this one looks like it has had issues over the years.....or the photo is just bad.

Here is the type of picture needed, although I would guess this has a refinished dial and the hands have been replaced at some point..

Drew, the watch you're thinking about is what I would consider my grail watch! However, there are many for sale out there with refinished dials. I may be wrong - someone set me straight if I am - but I thought the original oldies carried the Tudor logo.

I know...I'm in love with everything about it...except now the hands are making me think twice...It's hard to see in the photo (damn iPhone! ) but the face does read "Rolex Oyster Perpetual" on the top of the dial, and "Chronometre, Self Winding" on the bottom. Everything is very clean.
