Please help! Identify this for me...

I was given a Rolex and it has been sitting around for awhile and I have decided to try and get a better idea of what I have. I have been browsing around the site and found out where the serial number is located. After taking off the band, the serial number starts R49XXXX, with Stainless Steel above it. I can try and take a few pictures if that helps. Its not in all that great of shape so I was going to take it to a dealer to get cleaned and serviced. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Well without a picture or model number cannot really help you. A R date letter could suggest watch is from 1987,check for a ref number between lugs 12 o'clock position.

As Padi says, we need more to go on..

A picture of the dial etc. is always nice to be able to judge condition. Late 80's there was a lot of changes going on...new movements, model changes... Some can be very valuable and well worth restoring..

Ok, so you suggest taking the back of the watch off to expose the dial and inner workings? I am trying to get my camera up and working to take some pictures. I am also trying to take the band off at the 12 oclock position to try and find a reference number, but am having some trouble. I really appreciate the help.

I honestly have no idea about these watches, thats why I have been trying to figure out more on it. I have taken the watch band off of the 6 oclock side to expose the serial number, which I thought was a good sign. Like I said, any information I can find on this the better.

500.00 usd or maybe more if there are parts that need to be repaired or replace! Value of the watch, probably 2-2,500.00 dollars.

Would it be best to go ahead and spend the money to have it serviced in order to sell it? I would imagine it would bring more value if it has been previously serviced. Thanks again!

it will definitely look new when it leaves Rolex Service Center and you might end up keeping it!

Ok erwin, thanks! I am going to take it to a dealer shortly to get an estimate. Did I read they will then give me a certificate stating it was serviced by a certified Rolex dealer?

Post-service I would say $2000 tops, more like $1500. There are lots of SS Datejusts on ebay for $2K and below. The problem you will find is that you have no rep on the watch boards and you have no watch-selling feedback on eBay. That leaves you the bottom feeders on Craigslist, or a local buyer.

I'm confusedIs the OP asking for value with the intentions of "flipping it" or buying it?
