Oh no, you are wrong. The SD is a classic and not that often seen. The aluminium bezel is very cheap to replace once it gets stratched up, so don't worry about that. You have the right watch.

Love my SD. Wear it for awhile - then decide.

I was trying to satisfy conflicting urges by purchasing this watch. I wanted the watch to be readily recognized but subtle enough to impress on others my good taste.

After reading up on the internet I've decided (post purchase) that the Sea Dweller is a bit of a Submariner clone and mistaken as such. It also has an outdated aluminium bezel and is too common to become a true classic and appreciate in value in the near future!

Have I made a horrible mistake by buying the Sea Dweller?

Could a better watch have been bought to satisfy my shallow nature as mentioned in the second para? LOL!

Many thanks!
No way!!! What other timepiece can claim with proof it's pedigree??

Congratulations on a fantastic watch and wear it in excellent health! Don't let anything dissatisfy you with your choice. You have the best there is!

The Sea Dweller is a well regarded watch, so I am not sure why you are asking this question. Many people right now appear to be buying out the "older" version because now the DSSD will be taking it's place, making the older version possibly a collector's item.
