Daytona Screw down Pushers - Open or Closed

Sorry if this has been hashed out before, but Since I don't really plan on swimming with or bathing with my Daytona, do most people keep their screw down locks open or closed. I tend to actually use the chronograph function quite often and screwing and unscrewing is a bit of a chore. What do you all do?

The screw down feature is to prevent operation of the pushers when under water.

Otherwise leave them unscrewed if you want to.

Agree. It’s a pain to consistently unscrew the pushers. I too use the Chrono complication on a regular basis. Just leave them unscrewed unless your swimming.

Looks wise, the watch looks much better with the tight screws. In fact leaving them unscrewed IMHO will make the watch look odd. But that is my own opinion

will keeping them unscrewed allow moisture getting in the movement?

No, there is no gasket or seal on the pusher screw itself.

The seals are inside the pusher shaft.

The screw-down pushers are one of the reasons I sold my Daytonas. So difficult to use in a hurry.

I don't use the chrono function, so I leave it screwed down.

However, not screwing them down does not effect the water resistance unless you want to engage the chrono module underwater.

I actually prefer screwed down pushers than non-screw. Better water proof in my opinion.

If using the pusher to time I leave them undone. If not timing, I screw them down.

Paul Newman left his unscrewed, that's all the endorsement you need. Carry on.

i keep mine screwed down unless using the chrono. From te looks of this thread it doesn't really matter from a technical standpoint so do what you like.

Personal preference is to have them fully tightened!

Quite enjoy having the theatre of removing the watch to change the Chronos!

As Eddie already said - not a risk above the surface of the ocean, lake or pool. But operating them underwater can increase the risk as the pusher stem moves up/down against the o-ring while pressing it.

Now there is another risk, albeit slight, when leaving the pushers unscrewed all the time. That’s the risk of damaging their crown or stem by catching the extended pushers on something. Like on a door jamb or other hard-edged item that can catch them under force.

I can’t find a diagram to illustrate the difference in mm, but I’d say the extra 1-2mm is minimal. That’s one risk - but it’s the underside of the pusher crown that’s now exposed to catch things at odd angles which can cause some damage.

You know, the earliest models didn’t have screw-down pushers. But now they do. Just ask yourself why and you’ll see it’s worth the effort to keep them down

If you use the chronograph function a lot, I think it makes more sense to leave them open. That's what I do (not that I use the function that much, though). It's just a pain when you do want to time the odd something and the thing is locked.

Couple of caveats: I never submerge the watch and I screw down the pushers when the watch goes back into storage.

When I had my Tudor Big Blocks I recall unscrewing the pusher just enough to be able to engage the chrono but not enough to increase the length if that makes sense.

I ran a poll on this question not to long ago. Overwhelmingly owners leave them screwed in. I was leaving mine unscrewed and ended up not using it as much and screwing them in just so they are better protected from an accidental bump.

I use the chrono function on my iPhone, so my Daytona pushers stay nice and tight at all times

I use mine a lot while at work, so they’re unscrewed about half of the time. I prefer the look of them screwed down (maybe because the vast majority of the pics we post and see usually have them screwed in?), so the rest of the time I usually screw them back down.

Oh, sometimes I grill while wearing it so then they get screwed back out again!

I don't have a Daytona but if I did I'm pretty sure I would keep the pushers screwed down tight.

Unscrewing them does not change the pusher length by more than a a quarter mm or so. Otherwise you’d be pushing a hollow tube, not a button

They are locks, not seals. So the real question is do you leave them locked or unlocked.

If you use them a lot, unlock 'em; they serve no other function.

Daso, Congrats on your 5 digit daytona. Dials are awesome aren't they.

Not to contradict Larry but I do think they serve a function. On my Omega Dynamic one of my pushers fell out after 10 years of wearing it, I do not think that would happen with screw down locks which would have distributed forces on that pusher over time.

It’s been a while since I’ve unscrewed mine. I need to start using my chrono more!
