New Tudor Ranger

Some of you may have seen my post about the shattered crystal on my GMT II. Well, as consolation I have a new Tudor Ranger Date to wear while the GMT is in the shop.

It arrived Friday -- here are some initial impressions:

Initially the small size surprised me. I knew it was a 35 mm watch, but I've just grown accustomed to larger watches. Now that I've worn it a bit, the size isn't bothering me. It's actually nice to be wearing such a light comfortable watch.

I've always loved the look of the Explorer and this was sort of a way to scratch the itch for a vintage Explorer without plunking down all that cash. And the added bonus is having a date -- I more often need reminding of the date than of the time. For legibility and clean lines, I think the dial on this watch compares favorably with the Explorer dial.

I have some doubts about the dial markers. They look almost too good, so I think they may have been touched up. That's not such a big deal to me, though I know the collector market would prefer original condition. Anyway, the seller tells me that it hasn't been touched up (at least not by him), so maybe it's just a good example.

I took it to my watchmaker and he thought the watch was the genuine article though he shared my concerns about the possible touching up to the dial.

Anyway, here are some pictures that come from the seller's website (they were very good to deal with, btw). These are better than what I could take:

BTW, the watch dates to about 1974. I'm taking the seller's word on this b/c I don't believe you can use a Tudor serial number to date production like you can with a Rolex. At least searches of the Internet don't reveal any Tudor serial number charts.

I know there is a TRF Tudor serial number database and I'll post there....
