Dj41 vs. DJ II

I’m eyeballing a Datejust II that’s listed now on the forum. 116333 (dj2);

What are the differences in that vs the new model 126333 (datejust 41)

Overall it seems people much prefer Datejust 41 over the 2.

The dj41 is a much more refined finish especially around the lugs. It’s a much nicer fit as oppose to the Djii

It’s hard to see much difference between those pics. Maybe the lugs look a little more “stocky”?

The DJ2 is an overall more ‘bold’ design than the DJ41.

DJ2 is a true 42mm watch, the DJ41 comes in a little under 41mm which is strange considering its name.
DJ41 replaced the DJ2. DJ2 had the shortest run of any Datejust model to date, 7 or 9 years, I forget which.
The DJ2 is unique among Datejust in many respects. It was a large watch that really came ahead of the large watch trend which hasn’t gone away despite many predictions that it would.
I liked the DJ2 so much that I have three in my collection and they’re all keepers.
In essence, the DJ2 is the modern day wideboy Rolex. I think it’s a stunning watch as do many others, but many more used to the classic shape and size of the DJ36 felt it looked out of proportion to the DJ36 and thus disliked it. The DJ41 addressed these feelings by bringing a larger Datejust more into proportion with the DJ36.
The bezel of a DJ2 is wider and fatter than that in the DJ41 and baton dial DJ2’s have wider, more sporty looking batons than those found in the DJ41.
For many, me included, I find the DJ2 a more sporty and youthful looking Datejust than either the 36 or the 41, both of which have more a traditional Rolex appearance.
DJ2’s are holding their value very well in the Datejust market and this is likely because by some they are sought after and no longer made.
The DJ2 is a beautiful reference and if you have 7” wrist or larger probably suit your wrist better.

The II is the larger, bolder, more masculine of the two. The 41 is the smaller, dressier, gentler of the two. Both are great, but the 41 is more the dress watch and the II is sort of a sport/dress hybrid which is why I kept my II rather that flipping. The 41 just didn't do it for me when I finally got to see one in person.

I prefer the DJII... it's manufactured correctly with 41mm instead of 39.5

Ive had the DJ2 its a beautiful watch for the money both dressy and sporty and doesn’t hurt the pocket. I upgraded to the skydweller different movements but very similar looking . DJ 2 can’t go wrong

Another thought also it’s exciting in the journey of new acquisitions of Rolex watches and addicting at times but at least you can get most of your money back with the Rolex addiction and sometimes profit a little

This is true. If all things were equal I would go with the 41 just for the movement. I didn't think power reserve really mattered much until I got my last two watches with 70 hour reserves. 70 is a really nice number. Allows you to put your work watch in the safe Friday night, and have it still running when you put it back on Monday morning. I have to wind my II every week for this reason. Not a huge deal or anything but it is convenient having the extra time between winds.

That alone wasn't enough to sway me to the 41 camp, but it was a consideration.

Overall, I preferred the DJ2 for its wrist presence and casual look.

Excellent point. If you want the jubilee your decision becomes much simpler

I have a ss DJ41 and a TT DJII

DJ41 better ballanced in design
DJ II slightly larger ,which I enjoy.

In ss the DJ41 but in TT I prefer the DJII

Chris makes a good point here about the jubilee which I completely forgot to mention. Jubilee obviously not available as an option on the DJ2 and there is no jubilee on any other reference that can be made to fit either. It’s oyster bracelet only for the DJ2.

Get a Datejust 41 if possible it is proportionate and balanced

But if u want something little sportier, yet classy, dj2 is the watch for u (especially the baton stick dials)

Correction: Datejust II was released in 2009 and ended in 2016.
Correction: It did not come ahead of the big watch trend. Big watches were popular in 2006.
