Do you mean cheap as in price or cheap as in taste? If for the latter some of the cheapest looking Rolex are the most expensive ones. The Exp I IMHO is one of the most elegant and classy looking watch ever made, as far as the pricing though it is one of the less expensive rolex in their line up but class is seldom associated with monetary values.

There is probably no single item I can think of that represents the $ spread that watches do, if looked at new, even cars or boats, the cheapest new version in any country is probably 8,000 new and dearest 2,000,000 (with an average around 25000). Homes, country to country would be harder to equate, but again are a significant amount against the average income of the country. In our country the average house price is now 10 times the average annual income.

Watches as noted above can run from $2 to $2,000,000+, and probably average all people considered at around $250, so any watch at 5K plus would be considered expensive, particularly given the one at $2 most likely will tell the time just as well.

The mistake is to judge what you have by what others on this forum have. I feel incredibly fortunate indeed anyone who has a nice watch, or one that carries sentiment or even that you admire the complexity of a manual/auto wound movement means you are in good company and should not feel judged. Just my 2c worth.

P.S. Please give me a heads up on which people consider Patek cheap......

Even though there are many millions of Rolexes out there, I still do not see too many out in the wild. When I do, I'm thrilled to see one, no matter what model. They are all beautiful.

If we gauge "cheap" by retail price, then the '60s and '70s Milgauss must have been horrible, because it was not particularly expensive, it was over-engineered with no date feature, and it sold so poorly that they stopped making them for several years. Yet it was always an under-appreciated gem, even in its time. What do those maligned watches sell for now? Did they go from "cheap" back in the day to "real" now only because of collectibility and rarity?

The Explorer I is a classic. So is the Air-King. So is the Submariner, and so on. Even the least expensive model is a portrait of robust, efficient elegance. Nothing about Rolex is entry level or cheap.

IMO a cheap Rolex would be the Daytona PN that you bought in 1964.

The only cheap roles are the ones you get on that street named after a small river.

But seriously, It's definitely all relative, and there are people out there with all kinds of crazy attitudes and opinions. maybe there are people that would try and put someone down for owning a stainless steel rolex. Maybe there's also people with entry level rolexs putting down people wearing a Tudor. i would just say wear what you like and if you come across people with bad attitudes or judging people based on their watch... They probably lead a pretty sad life.

Rolex and cheap do not go hand in hand.

It's a matter of taste, some people like simplicity.

PS I saw a photo of Matt Damon wearing the Exp 1. Hope that helps and enjoy your nice watch.
super statement!

Only to a novice in the watch game.
Some of my favorite watches of all time are looked at as "entry level".

Compared to a Franck Muller Mega 4 (MSPR $US 2.7M) or compared to a bottom end Casio (MSRP approx. $US 12). All relative. I don't have an Explorer, but I do think that they are an attractive model, as well as functional. What more could one want from a watch? Enjoy!

The Explorer defines the "less is more" approach in a badazzzz watch.

Cheap...not a chance.

The Explorer I is the least expensive Rolex, it is not cheap. It has a classic simple elegant design, much like the Sub ND. I'm looking at it being my next purchase.

Nothing cheap about it! It actually has a more shock-resistant movement in it than the Sub-C ND.

A person who says it's "cheap" is the person who buys a Rolex for the name, and is not a true watch enthusiast.

Love mine! Could have spent twice as much (at the time had a budget of £8.5k) on other models but this is the one I wanted and hence the one I bought and have worn pretty much 24/7 for over two years and still love. I could careless if others don't like it or think it's over/under priced, it's for my pleasure 😃

I'm a woman and I wear an Air King. I like the simplicity of it. I don't want a watch with lots of diamonds that everyone will notice. Lots of women would want a much flashier watch but to each his/her own. I agree with everyone else - no Rolex is cheap. You can get a perfectly adequate watch (e.g. Timex) for well under $100 so spending $5K for a Rolex, even if it's a lot less than some others, is by no means cheap.

If you asked 100 people off the street.... "How much does an expensive watch cost to you?" I bet the average will be somewhere between $500 and $1000. An Expy1 is 10x that!!!

Cheap and Rolex only co-exist on Internet forums. Go love that thing until it is vintage.

I don't look at any Rolex as cheap, and I don't think most members here do either. The idea of an "entry level" Rolex never crosses my mind.

Regarding the Explorer, when I see one I only think "beautiful, tasteful, and most versatile watch available".

No Rolex is cheap, it's that some are less expensive than others.
That includes the now discontinued Air-King.

Since Rolex has transitioned to a pure luxury brand, I think even the lowest priced model is not considered cheap. Rolex's entry line is Tudor, and even that is not cheap.

Funny stuff.
Makes me remember an episode many years ago at a Harley Davidson dealership in California. I was out riding with some friends and I was on my heavily modded Storz Sportster (for those moto interested, my buddies were on a Dunstall Norton and a Rickman CB750). A salesman walks up to us and says to me "you ready to step up to a real Harley?"
That was a funny moment in time. 20 years later and I still remember it. lol.

The words cheap and Rolex don't go together.
How many cheap quartz watches can you buy for the
price of service?
