Any Rolex looked at as "cheap"

Hey all...so I got my Explorer 1 (39mm) a week ago and really do love it. It wears so well on my wrist and the 3,6,9 which I originally didn't like (originally liked the DJ2) are really growing on me. Cool lum too! Love that I can wear it with a suit and jeans alike.

So what I'm wondering is...do you guys feel that 1 Rolex is looked as as "cheap" compared to others? Do people feel that an Explorer 1 is like the "entry level" Rolex and not as a "real Rolex" ? I know it sounds funny as the watch is still over $6,500 but I'm just wondering what you all think. Thought it would be a good discussion.

In a Rolex range, the Explorer 1 is de facto the "cheapest watch" - not saying it is cheap.

I am currently contemplating getting the 214270 as part of my collection due to the fact it is cheap - but looks $$$.

Explorer 1 is certainly not cheap furthermore it is not entry level Rolex. The 34mm oyster perpetual is entry level and that is not cheap either.

Rolex and cheap do not go hand in hand.

It's a matter of taste, some people like simplicity.

PS I saw a photo of Matt Damon wearing the Exp 1. Hope that helps and enjoy your nice watch.

I wouldn't consider any Rolex watch cheap - from a pricing or quality standpoint.

I have been blessed to own a few Rolex watches and recently acquired an Explorer I 39mm; certainly not because of its price but because of it's looks, and understated ruggedness. it is a great go-to do everything watch as it's a sporty dress watch and a dressy sports watch - very versatile.

To your point I would say that there are those who think that Oyster Perpetuals, Air Kings, Explorers and even no date Subs are "entry level" Rolex watches. Of course there are also those who think that two-tones are for folk who cannot afford all gold. Some look at a vintage Rolex and figure that your grandfather left it to you and you can't afford your own. The of course there are those who think anything less than a PM Rolex is "lesser" or "cheap" as you say. OTOH, there are those who think that PM sports models are showy and of poor taste. Then there are those who think that all Rolex watches are either fake or too expensive.

Are you getting tired of reading my thoughts on what others think?

If you are - then you get my point. I say to what others think!

Enjoy the daylights out of your Explorer I; I know I will mine for it it is a great watch.

Cheap Rolexi show up on E-bay all the time. But no real Rolex will ever be cheap. However it might be a bargin at times.

good points!

I too believe "cheap" is relative. Some would even say a Patek is cheap. Well there are those who would also say Patek looks cheap.
So to each his own, really...

I don't think it is cheap in any sense of the word. We can get a bit insulated here but in the real world any Rolex is considered largely astronomically priced.

Yes, there are people who are ignorant enough to say things like that, but they are not to be taken seriously.

Some are truly naive and some are just asshats.

It is just best to change the subject and disengage from that person as quickly as possible.

Cheap and entry-level are terms that do not apply to Rolex watches.

Cheap definitely not the word, just different. Rolex supports a wide range of taste and budgets. Just starts off at what most people would say higher end.

There is nothing CHEAP about ANY Rolex. Whether that be quality or price or value. PERIOD. one of the things over the years that has always 'irked' me -was hering someone say 'I don't want a Submariner...EVERYONE has one....' which is VERY untrue.

I walked a friend of mine out of an AD And said -take 10 mins and count 'EVERYONES' submariners for me...he came back in and said.. Good point.

This. Remember, you can get a $50 Casio that sets itself to the atomic clock. The only time cheap and Rolex should be mentioned together is: A Rolex is not cheap.

To me only Rolex's with gold and diamonds look cheap. Steel watches are the classics and what Rolex is about IMO. The simpler the better, it says you have class, you are successful ,and confident.
My first watch was an Airking which I have had for over 25 years, since my wife wears it now, I wear a GMT which for me is Rolex's Jack of all trades, especially since I work in two different time zones... My favorite watch is the Sub. no date, like the explorer 1, it's classic, beautiful design and it does one thing very well, tell precise time. The Zen watch : )

What matters is how YOU feel? You feel cheap wearing it??
I've always loved the feeling I get wearing every one of my Rolex.

Enjoy YOUR Rolex and don't care what anyone else thinks of it!!!!

I'm staying away from this one... Wear your watch like no-one is watching, if someone picks it and thinks "cheap", that's their internal shyte at play, leave them to it and enjoy what makes you content.

The Explorer is one of the most simply elegant Rolex made. Anyone who thinks it looks cheap simply has little taste or appreciation for what a good looking watch is. Only my opinion, but I stand by it. Gorgeous watch, and I am always taken when I see one on someone's wrist. Every time, without fail.

No such thing as an "entry level" or "cheap" Rolex..

Entry into what ?? and how is a 5,000 plus dollar watch "cheap" (ask your next door neighbor if that's a cheap watch) - it's all stuff and nonsense..

Who stays awake at night and thinks these myths up ???

"Cheap" implies a judgment. "Less expensive" is a better, more neutral term. And, to me, less expensive Rolexes like the Explorer and the SubC ND (which I have) are unmatched in their elegance, simplicity, and versatility, regardless of price. Lots of people on the forum also have more expensive references (including me) but come back to these classics for the majority of their wrist time.

IMHO, of course.

Nope.

Sure, it's not made out of any precious metal, it doesn't have all kinds of nifty complications, the design is fairly straightfoward.

But it's an amazing watch. I love it so much it kinda killed off my desire to get any other SS models in this price range with the exception of models with a clear caseback (get all weak in the knees for this feature).

Now I am tempted by a Patek 5712 or AP ROC in SS, but that's an entirely different level...
