Well, it's been so long, we almost look alike.....

I guess the 40% markup isn't enough for that authorized dealer? I would keep the watch, but post negative reviews on Google, Yelp, and other social websites. By exposing their tactics Rolex will become aware and could strip them of their AD status.
Rolex does not care.

ADs charging prices other than MSRP for Rolexes is very common in many parts of the world. It will not shock Rolex with an amazing revelation to tell them that this happens.

And leaving negative reviews for an AD that sourced a hard-to-find watch at below street price... well, that just seems like poor taste. No one forced her to buy the watch.

I think you should lambaste your loving wife for having the gall to get you an expensive gift into which she obviously put in the time, effort and thoughtfulness in a vain attempt to provide you with some long-term happiness from her heart.

OP, um no. Do not do this.

The law of unintended circumstances is in play.

Wear your beautiful new watch. Sounds like you married very well!

Leave bad reviews for the dealer.....they took advantage of your wife.

God forbid if you ever bought it for MSRP and then resold it on Ebay, you know the dealer and Rolex would be telling you to kick rocks in the future.

Rolex is apparently calling dealers when they catch people on Ebay selling watches bought from AD's.....yet you think Rolex would be OK with those AD's selling them at a mark-up? Highly doubtful.

Yes, it was a gift.....calling Rolex does not diminish the act. If anything, I am sure they asked her what the special occasion was that she was buying a man's watch and she told them.....so the AD knew they were taking advantage of her. They aren't stupid, they knew she wasn't going to say no if they raised the price.

I hope your wife knows nothing other than how wildly happy you are to get a new watch and how thankful/grateful you are to her for the very lovely gesture.

Can’t believe getting a new watch and a highly desired watch as a gift can make anyone miserable.

She said they would not make it available at normal retail price.

They tried to use the recent price increase as one of the reasons. Our countries import tax is 5%, and we have a %5 VAT. So there is no way it would be more expensive than say Germany or UK.

What would any of you do if you were in my place? Would bringing this to the attention of Rolex make any difference?
Post the math. None of us know what the taxes and correct MSRP price should be in your country. Nobody can form an intelligent opinion without the math.

But why do you believe that it shouldn't be more expensive than in the UK? Although this has begun to change recently, the UK has basically had the cheapest prices anywhere due to the exchange rates. That's why their watches are impossible to find - bargain hunters were all over that scene.

Anyway, more info needed.

If they are scalping and it upsets you that they ripped off your wife, then why not complain?

This isn't a privilege to own the watch. They make millions of these things. You are not lucky. Its something your kind partner worked and paid for.

If they aren't following the rules then it makes sense to investigate if you have the time and energy.

We dont know what is local Rolex MSRP it is not listed on the Rolex website for our region. We have to believe whatever the OB tells us. Not sure if it is a coincidence, but the hard to get watches are always priced very close to grey market.

when comparing the slow moving watches they are usually the same or cheaper than Rolex OB in Europe for example, that is a clue we usually use. Our import tax is 5% only.

Forgot to mention that in Dubai the same watch is sold for $9,000 and the import and VAT charges are unified for the region, so prices here should be the same.

Well, it appears that you'll need to do quite a bit more research before complaining to Rolex. It's probably not a good idea in any case, but you definitely need to have your facts ready if you want to be taken seriously.
