I meant it more as many of these folks just want to be seen wearing a Rolex with no more interest in watches beyond that. They probably don't even understand what an automatic movement it.

But you make a good point on the clones. I'm sure that's a big thing out there as well.

Really strange post....I echo what other people have said here. Rolex make 1M watches a year and Vegas is full of rich people so you saw a lot of people wearing Rolexes is hardily ground breaking news. Yet you now feel turned off the brand by being made to feel like a sheep wearing the same watch as everyone else? Go to a poor country or city if you don't want to see a lot of Rolexes.

I dunno. I was texting a previous work buddy the other day and he told me he sold his real YM because he found a clone that nobody could tell the difference from the real one. He knows I’m a big watch guy and insisted it would fool me. Intrigued, I asked him to text me a pic. Lol, it was not fooling me or probably anyone reading this post. It just looked all wrong.

I’m sure from 20 feet away these clones fool people, including us, but not from six or seven feet away. Even from a bit of distance, the proportions and shine of the metal just don’t look right.

In Vegas, some rollers wear a Rolex...and some casinos offer a free shuttle service to the nearest pawnbroker.

Got back from Vegas, felt almost a visceral disgust at how many Rolexes I saw

I agree. This is not the first time we’ve had a thread like this. People drive the same cars, wear the same clothes, use the same phones, live in similar homes, but if they see someone else wearing a Submariner, they have a mental breakdown over it.

I’m not a psychologist, but there might be something else going on here. And let’s be honest about how much are really out there. I go to Las Vegas. I take luxury vacations all the time. I see Rolexes but not as nearly as much as people claim. People often over-react and over-exaggerate on these watch forums.

As someone with 52,800 posts on a watch forum, I'd think you'd constantly be looking at other watches on people.

This.

I wear my Rolex watches for my enjoyment, not others. I wouldn't know if others see mine although in some settings professionals will remark on mine.

If the Rolex sales numbers are accurate, Rolex has produced about 20 million watches since I got my first one. Given that they are luxury items, I find it no surprise to see them frequently when in the vicinity of large crowds that would be expected to include persons that purchase luxury items.

The most frequent conversations I have about Rolex watches are with doctors, in upscale restaurants, while flying, or in wealthy cities. Seems normal to me.

I suppose what I'm guessing is that some feel as if their watch should be more exclusive.

You'd think you'd be excited to see so many in the wild

lol "visceral disgust".....

and even if you saw 100 in the weekend (unlikely), thats after passing by thousands or tens of thousands of people... no, not "everyone has one"

I even played a game where I sat down and watched people pass by me and counted how many consecutive people were wearing a Rolex (it was 6).

I think I saw literally every single model.
If you hated that, don't go to Disney World.

I still love Rolex, and always will. No other brand is as committed to bracelets and the things that make a Rolex Oyster so tough, such as thick cases, screw down crowns, etc. I can fall in a pool or lake all day wearing virtually ANY Rolex. Try that with most APs or Pateks.

I find wearing one to be pleasurable, and I love seeing them on other people.

You will always have instances like such in highly visited tourist locations. This just shows you how popular Rolex is amongst other brands. Lately, I have had the thought of wanting to wear something different for special occasions, but I have not really allowed that thought to materialize as I still always stick to one of my Rolex. The value of your possession shouldn't be affected negatively by this particular reason.

No surprise
I mean, it IS vegas after all - what were you expecting? Sorry to sound a bit harsh, but it is called 'sin city" for a reason. People with some money, little money, lots of money go to vegas to be part of the scene there.

There are way more fake Rolex’s on wrists than real Rolex’s so keep that in kind when you see a “Rolex”.

Not sure if that makes the visceral disgust better or worse though..

Why do you care what others wear? People wouldn’t wear them if the brand had no value.
I notice 10x more Apple Watches than Rolexes. Guess I will buy something else to record my workouts now.

Sounds like OP is upset more people are in the “club” than they would like.

Went to a country club to play golf and everyone was driving 6 figure cars..surprise. Spent the weekend at the lake and everyone was surfing behind 6 figure wake boats.

Bingo. Contrary to what many have said about this stance, I actually hate it when I get noticed wearing my watch. Rolex, or more generally, watch collecting was more of a niche thing in the past (before the days of Hodinkee, YT, Instagram, etc) where only those in the hobby knew about them. Now, it appears to have taken on a new life of status symbols, commodity investing, and a check box for those desperate to get attention and validation from others.

The reality that this cohort of folks came into the watch space and changed what it used to be is what individuals like me lament... and seeing so many of these watches on the wrists of ppl is just a confirmation of this. It has nothing to do with feeling bad or insecure because others are wearing the watch.

I have been trying to pick what I’m wearing on my next trip.

I normally wear YG Rolex like my 116718 or DD40. This time I was thinking maybe my AP or Patek 5960/1A.

Wondering too. There’s been fake Rolex around for decades, what makes one think they now outnumber real ones.
