Thinking of selling my Rolex

I got jibes behind my back when I wore my first Sub for work. I continued to wear it, as I liked it and it cost me a lot of money. I looked at the people sniping and thought less of them and their opinions because of it.

But if it's a problem to you and you don't want to wear it put the watch away until you do. One day you'll wish you still had it I can prity much guarantee that.

I think your experience as a LEO is probably more common than people realize.

Even in corporate circles, judgmental comments can creep in. I've seen it in year-end bonus comparo conferences where "need" becomes a qualifier vs. pure performance. The guy with the YG DD is perceived to have less need than a performer with "a wife, a dog, and 4 kids who can't afford a decent car".

If you are worried about non watch people noticing your watch, don’t. They most likely won’t and even if they do know it is a Rolex I doubt they care. But at the end of the day it is about how you feel that is important. If I was wearing something that was 10k and made me uncomfortable for whatever reason, I would sell it too.

Ask a non Rolex person how much they think a Rolex cost. I bet most have no idea.

My point was, being able to buy a Rolex is still something special and not that normalized. Having multiple watches worth several +10k is not normal.

Having a Rolex can draw attention, replacing it with a 4-5k IWC won't change much imho. Just buy what makes you happy.

I understand, I felt the same way with my sub. I bought a PO and I love it and no one knows what it is. If they do then you know they like watches. I just bought an older 36mm explorer and I don’t feel uncomfortable wearing it, it flies under the radar.

A Sub is the ideal daily in my opinion. You're overthinking it but if you can't come to grips with it then sell it.

It depends where you live and the group of people you are with. Believe me I know many people that had no clue I was wearing a Rolex. Even if so, they think it is like 1k or something. No idea the cost either.

Given you collection I would keep it as it adds some variety. These are a pain in the neck to replace from an AD. Just keep it and forget about it. A few months from now you may want to put it on.

If you don't feel comfortable wearing a $10K Sub, how do you feel comfortable with a Grand Seiko.

Maybe it’s just me, but all my family and friends know what I did for a living before I retired. Wearing or not wearing a Rolex doesn’t change a thing. The big elephant in the room is there for everyone to see. You can’t conceal it by not wearing a watch.

Either way, it’s liberating to live your life without such petty constraints.

if it doesnt give you joy, then sell it. Some people dont feel comfortable or happy with an expensive car, clothes, watch, handbag, wallet, house, etc. I totally understand and its a good lesson to learn. In the end, a rolex is a luxury item. I know a gentleman with a nice sports car who doesnt feel comfortable driving it to work, so he keeps it in the garage, and it doesnt give him joy.

I don’t either. But those aren’t the same thing. People know what a Rolex is. My 12 year old nephew knows what it is. People on Instagram know what it is. And no, most people can’t tell from across the room. But someone you’re having a conversation with?

People are delusional if they think people don’t notice what they are wearing. Not everyone, but definitely people. Most are just too polite to say anything.

Rolex doesn’t spend tens of millions of dollars for advertising and marketing for the average person not to know about their watches.

I just googled a list of the top luxury brands in the world ( Rolex is included) and there’s no way I would be able to tell the non watch brands’ products on the specific list over other brands same products….. Well, maybe an LV bag, come to think of it, ONLY because an ex wanted one and I went into many many stores looking with her. LOL.

Only that it was ridiculous wearing a Rolex in work (I ran a Police driving school at the time).
When we went out to play with the Public the G Shock came out.
The comments were intended to run me down which made no difference at all to me.

This.... my Wife was shocked that a Sub was a Rolex she was expecting gold and diamonds. My mom felt the same way too.

I get it. I don’t wear my old Sea Dweller at work or any professional setting. Rolex does indeed have an image problem. And I say that as somebody who is on the list for a current green dial DJ (way more blingy than I could’ve ever imagined I would buy).
But you also have to learn to not care outside of the professional setting at least. If friends and family have an issue with a nice and very practical well made timepiece that you like then you need to reevaluate your friends (at least).

Not sure. Most people will have no clue about Patek, AP, Omega, any other bigger or smaller brand. But they will know Rolex and many will have a negative association around that brand name. Gotta watch that. You wouldn’t want to roll into the corporate parking lot with a used 911 either - just to park it next to your boss’ old Ford Explorer.

I have done it, except my 911 was new and paint to sample.

In any case, nobody knows what a Rolex looks like unless they’re into watches.
