Thinking of selling my Rolex

I got my Sub a couple months ago from an AD and thinking of selling. I like the watch but main reason is I don’t feel comfortable wearing it. I don’t like to wear it around work, friends, or family because it feels like I’m showing other people up. I prefer to be more under the radar. Ive only been wearing it around my house, when I’m alone running errands around town, or date nights.

Selling it would open up funds for me to buy watches where I won’t feel that way (plus pocket a few grand). Current collection is Sub, quartz Grand Seiko, and Seiko dive watch. Once sold I’m thinking my new collection would be IWC Mark XX, Longines dress watch, and Seiko dive.

Thoughts on me selling the Rolex?

You have to do what you feel is right.
I wear what I like and really don't care what others think.
Rarely has anyone ever commented, I doubt that most of these people even look at what you are wearing.

If you’re not comfortable wearing it then let it go ..

Stop apologizing for doing well. Wear it and enjoy or sell it.

You should wear what you want and not worry about what others think. They aren't living your life. However, if you will enjoy one of those other pieces or can put the money to good use otherwise then that may be the correct choice for you. Which sub model is it?

I sold my explorer a while ago… I wanted a tool watch and it felt more like jewelry. I’ve been considering a 5 digit sub/explorer. Recently picked up a Big pilot 43 … totally different vibe, much more utilitarian. It’s somehow large and under the radar all at the same time.

You shouldn't worry about what others think about what your wearing. It's your life not theirs. However, if you feel that you will enjoy one of those other pieces better then it could be a good move to make.

We are all into watches. In reality most people have no idea that you are wearing a Rolex, Patek, AP,...or fill in the brand. Having said that if it makes you feel uncomfortable then find a watch you love to wear everywhere. Good luck

I agree with Slackergirl: no one is impressed by what's on your wrist. Wear it and enjoy it. If anyone notices then they'll respect your tasted in good watches.

Few people notice my watches. Wear what you like. But if the Sub makes you uncomfortable, sell it. But remember, you earned it. Any jealous people can earn one themselves.

I sold my Blue gold sub 2 months ago , it looked too big and flash on my 61/2+ inch wrist to the extent I was covering with my sleeve . I bought a Vacheron Traditionnelle ( green dial ) and love it , whilst a gorgeous looking watch it suits me as it flies under radar

Sell it and buy something which you will wear without being afraid and does make you happy.

Personally I don’t understand your reasoning. A Sub is not exactly a ridiculously expensive bling watch. Many of those around in the wild.
Some like to spent money on cars, boats, hunting, holidays and others buy a nice watch. Why should you feel that you have to justify owning a Rolex.

If you don't enjoy wearing and have that feeling - nothing is really going to change your mind. You're much better off selling it and moving into something you're more comfortable with and actually will wear - whatever that may be.

I've felt that way about watches too - and I don't own them anymore.

Got to do what makes you feel comfortable.

Pointless owning a watch if you don't enjoy wearing it haha!

Just for some perspective too - my family (parents specifically) hate the fact I spend money on watches and my mother in particular makes it very clear, she disapproves and finds it vulgar. This is quite a deep topic though under the surface. They worked hard to bring me up in an environment where I could do as well as possible, be as successful as I could etc, and for that I am grateful, however now having achieved that which they set out for me, I find it paradoxical. I don't let it bother me too much though. I just buy more lol

How about the new Tudor 41 monochrome? Less flashy, more tooly

And agree on Grand Seiko, under the radar yet cheaper and arguably a better watch than Rolex in the Spring Drive model. It is stealth wealth

If you're uncomfortable, sell it. Just remember... the vast majority don't notice or really care about your watch.

Good counsel here, but you do you to be happy. There's a good chance down the road you may regret selling it. I've been wearing various rolex for close to 30 yrs - 24/7 -never an issue in any setting. Vast majority of people don't notice or care.

The issue is with you, not the watch. No on cares and even fewer notice. Your Submariner is an icon and a great lifetime watch. I would not sell it and any of the other watches you mention can be purchased over time.

I've tried that IWC on a couple times and it's a great watch. And yeah it doesn't carry as much baggage as a Rolex. Everyone needs to do what feels comfortable to them.

Ever consider something like a Moonwatch where you might fell less apprehensive about wearing it vs a Sub?

Trade it for a 14060 sub

5 digits are under the radar versus the ostentatious modern subs

Just cannot understand why you bought it in the first place, and just cannot understand why you think you would be showing off by wearing a watch.Been wearing Rolex watches for well over 50 years and you could count of one hand the number of friends family or anyone world wide have noticed or made a comment on whatever watch I was wearing.

Truthfully, I don’t think 99.9% of people have a clue nor care about watches or what someone else wears.

But like you, I remember feeling a little self conscious when I got my first Rolex. My family came from humble beginnings.

I’ve since wisened up and been enlightened nobody gives a crap and wear what you like and be proud (not prideful, but proud).

My humble opinion is you might regret selling your first Rolex.

It does seem strange that you didn’t have these thoughts before you bought it?At the end of the day it’s just a watch that most people aren’t interested in. How do you know if you’ll feel better wearing a lesser brand?
