Seiko Seiko Seiko Seiko Seiko

I like my Seikos. Without shame, I proudly state that includes both autos and quartz.

My small, but fun collection:

Randall Benson built 6309 (fully restored, relumed, and sapphire crystal)

6309 quartz hybrid from Dean Pattrick (movement, dial, and hands from a 7548 SQ Japan only, with kanji day, sapphire crystal, SQ jubilee bracelet machined to fit the 6309, beadblasted)

300m Tuna Can

300m MarineMaster

200m Quartz diver (just back from Jack @ IWW with a relume, crystal, bezel, batteries, and seals. My first "nice" watch and a gift from my parents when I graduated college in 1992)

Very nice SEIKO collection. SEIKO's are great, and an excellent value. I have this one myself!

Seiko some of the worlds best value for money watches on this planet.I personally believe that the Seiko Models like the SXK 007/009 and the Citizen Promaster range are the best dive watches out there. Why? Because they are cheap to buy, attainable, reliable, and true professional tools. They really are extraordinary value for money, and will work well for many many years in a hard diving environment.Below my vintage 6309 from 1980.

Here's my first, circa 1980.

Still keeps great time so long as I remember to change the battery every 5 years or so

Well Miner here is one from 1943 still beating strong case looks worse than what it is still keeping great time. And afraid its a pet hate of mine, when people say its only a Seiko,or only my beater,or only a ETA.All these watches have a part to play in this crazy world of watches. And if it was not for the likes of Seiko,Citizen Miyota and ETA some would never hope to own a mechanical watch.

The fun part of "it's only a Seiko" is that so many will never know about the high end watches they produce for the home market. The Grand Seikos, the MarineMaster, 600m and 1000m Tuna's, etc.

Quite true there is a misunderstanding in some, that people assume Seiko equals affordable/cheap. Most are undoubtedly referring to Seiko's normally found on the street in Europe and the Americas, and they are definitely a good, fantastic, value for the money. But you can also get vintage and new high end Seiko's, which, until the advent of the Internet, were relatively unknown outside of Japan. And a few other far east Asian countries (Taiwan, HK, Singapore ETC.) "King Seiko","Grand Seiko", and "Seiko Credor", you will find in these watches that, movement and case finish wise, easily compete with the best of mass produced swiss watches, i.e. Omega, Rolex, etc. As for style… well, that is in the eye of the beholder. At best they can be considered very conservative. But it really depends which movements, and watches you are comparing to. OWhat this all boils down to is: Seiko makes some truly outstanding products, and some mediocre ones, just like many other companies. If you want to buy one, you should, by all means do it. Because their bang-for-the-pound-factor is bloody amazing, at both ends of the spectrum.

Check out the regulator adjuster on this one! And check the shock protection on the non-balance jewels. That's real quality!and there own movement test, to a much higher spec than the Swiss COSC

selected Grand Seiko quartz model

Note 1: Seiko re-issued a limited edition of the "Astron" in 2000-1 that used a special version of the 9F movement that was rated to ± 2 seconds per year.
Note 2: The 9F movement is reportedly designed to run fifty years before it needs servicing.
Note 3: Other Grand Seiko quartz models use the 8J movement. Even less is know about this movement.

"Only a seiko" is my second oldest watch after my "only a timex" that I had at school in 1969. Both still run very well and keep good time and they both got the sh1t beat out of them. The cost of the watches added together = 1 link in my sd bracelet. Maybe Seiko should re think their advertising strategy.

BTW, how do you guys pronounce SEIKO? Is it "psycho" or "see-ko"?

Psycho is a collector of Seiko's

Sheepko is a collector of sheep.

Both have support groups, though the Sheep-ko guys get a set of Wellingtons...

A friend of mine who knows his watches picked up a Grand Seiko in a charity shop for £20 and sold it on fleabay for £880. The guy who bought it thought he got a real bargain.
It was a Chronometer or their equivalent.
Lovely watch and the finish was exceptional.

There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of with that great Seiko collection, Jeff. Some really nice pieces there.

Hi, My first Seiko was a Bellmatic , then came a seiko Chronometer DD with a gold dot (like the omega connies) on the case back, sadly it was stolen from my car in 1983.
Bought a Seiko Quartz DD & an automatic , date diver from HK in 1991, both still going strong till date,
I have 2 Seikosha wall clocks.
During the 70s Seikos in India were on the top of the list & very well accepted.Other watch brands like Omax, Citizen, Enicar, Ricoh. were cheap but sold in good nos.

Depends on when you catch me.

The MarineMaster hardly leaves my wrist. It's an awesome tool watch. Seiko really went to the hilt with this diver.

The quartz 6309 is neat and unique.

However, the Randall Benson 6309 may be a favorite. Put together from cherry picked parts and tuned. Classic design.

I don't know.
