Rolex Sub question: Safe in public swimming pools?

My apologies if this has been discussed before.

A good pal was asking if it was safe to wear his Sub in a public swimming pool. Just to add some more clarity, public swimming pools here add a lot of chlorine in the water, possibly because of the high usage of the pool.

I felt all that chlorine in the pool would certainly mess up the rubber gasket in the crown whereas the pal thought that if the watch could take a dip in the ocean, pool water shouldn't do it much harm.
At times, the level of chlorine in the water is so high, my eyes are pretty red after a swim.
A couple of local water-based Theme parks have similar issues.

I told the pal to leave his watch at home when he went for a swim in the pool; wearing his Sub in the sea on the other hand, should be OK.

We contacted a local AD (not a Rolex) who felt that we shouldn't take any risks with a Sub; ideally we needed a private pool.
Yeah, right!

So, who's giving the correct advice- me or the pal?

Thanks for reading.

I will guarantee you that all the pool equipment used at these pools have stainless steel parts and rubber gaskets... They are immersed in the stuff 24/7, unlike a Sub that may only see an hour at a time...........and they get along just fine....

I'll be the first to admit that I'm no expert, but I'd venture to say that chlorinated swimming pool water (even if you feel that the chlorine levels are higher than normal) can't be much worse for a Submariner than saltwater, which is pretty corrosive in its own right.

Of course, moderation is the key - I wouldn't want to leave my Sub sitting in any type of water for an extended period of time, but I think that an occasional dip in any sort of diluted liquid isn't that bad.

Don't leave it submerged and rinse it after and you'll never see a problem. Now if you left it underwater for a long period of time and then left it baking in the sun for a period of time you will see some issues but nothing with the gaskets, just the finish itself.

I don't think it would harm the watch, even at higher levels. However, just as with a dip in the ocean, you give a good fresh water rinse after swimming or diving. It probably couldn't hurt, and provide peace of mind in the process.

The rinse after is the big part. I do not own a Rolex yet but I have dived with many other watches and just like all your dive equipment you need to rinse it when you're done.

It is fine--have worn them in pools for last 20 plus years--definitely rinse off later. Of course living in Pa. now - not a whole lot of swimming going on as of late!!

Of course, there might be the proverbial Baby Ruth floating amongst the swimmers, too.
My nephew, working as a life guard, had to fish one of those out...
He almost didn't go back.

That is terrible. Wonder how that would affect the workings of a Rolex?

He almost quit his job after that...

I don't even want to think what it would do to SS or gold...

Maybe just me but why do people buy a dive watch and then worry about taking in in the bath, shower, pool etc.....

Get out there take it for a swim.

Enjoy
