I am so sorry but I HATE IT!

Hello,
I am the guy whose friend offered to swap my Patek 5107 for his Rolex Gold Submariner. The advice from this forum was - DO NOT SWAP.

I agree 100%.

Since that decision - the owner of the YG Submariner has said to me - please hold onto the Submariner for a while and please feel free to wear it!

So - I have the best of both worlds. A Patek 5107 to wear and an occassional Gold Submariner.

Since the situation unfolded I only have the following statement to make about the Gold Submariner - I HATE IT! (in the nicest possible way).

Why do I say this?

Well for the following reasons:-

1) It is too dam heavy.
2) The crown is way too large and annoys me
3) People I do not admire - like the Blingly Sub! People I respect admire the Patek in white gold.

I am so sorry to make these statements.... but they are true. Personally I would prefer to wear my (coming very soon) Explorer I. I am infact excited about wearing the Explorer but I can't wait to get the gold sub off my wrist!

Some scans :-

I'm not really into diamonds on watches, but actually, that is a beautiful watch. Dials can be changed.

You did make the right choice though.

I understand you don't like that particular watch... so give it back to your friend.

Are you Canadian?

Are you Canadian? What is there to be sorry about? Your opinion is perfectly valid.

As for my opinion. There is a conflict in character of the watch as it is a sport watch that is “pimped out”. Reminds me of a football player in ballet tights. The diamonds and the emeralds are a tad over the top. I have only had gold watches with the head unit so I cannot attest to the added weight with the gold bracelet. Personally I like the weight and feel of gold…allot. Now your Patek is a true dress watch, that is both elegant, refined, and drop dead gorgeous. The Explorer is a lovely sport watch, clean and simple.

All the best,
George

PS: Nice pics.

You are truly a lucky guy! How many people own a Patek, and have friends that lends them their gold Rolex? I congratulate you to this, also to the coming Explorer, that is one of my favourites.

Give the Rolex back to your friend, but do not let him know that you hate it.

BTW: Are you sure you hate it? Perhaps you really like it, but your self image do not allow gold watches? This is the fact for me. I like many of the gold watches especially the Daytonas and the new WG sub, but since I am not "a gold watch person" I do not own any...

Best,

A

P.S. I would also pick the Patek. No doubt about that.

I think the heaviness of an all-gold watch could be a wonderful thing. As long as you understand it's heavy because it contains a lot of precious material, and you appreciate that fact.

For an everday wear I would surely opt for a non-all-gold watch. But it would be nice to wear such a gold "clunker" occasionaly. With no diamonds though...

Not a fan of that watch either--Love the WG SUb or the plain YG one--not champagne Serti myself.

Never liked the Gold/Blue combo myself... reminds me of some sailor boys watch, esp with the diamonds, and I could never see myself wearing it with anything I own.

At least you got to try the Sub with no strings and now know for sure. Enjoy your Patek.

I liked mine as well and would rather be wearing it than a plain old looking 5107 Calatrava.

But then the recession came.......

And I realized that I was being forced to negotiate vendor and contractor pricing down in order to keep from going under on projects, and that wearing a solid gold Rolex sent the message that I was taking food out of the mouths of others, while flaunting personal wealth.

Frankly, in this era, I wouldn't wear a Patek either. My "bling" watch these days is a Breitling Super Avenger, with the bling being the downside and the HUGE subdials being readable for my 59 year old eyes without reading glasses.

And my new Seiko $300 Sinn look alike makes me feel much better about the truth of our modern economy and why I need those working with me to be as frugal as I have become.

I'm afraid that gold Rolexes and Patek Phillippe watches are part of an oligarchy these days that says to me...... "I had enough money to help my local charities, food banks, family, and employees, but I'd rather put the extra $20K into a watch for me to wear.

Turns out that this is a false message, as most people with the money for a solid gold Rolex or most any Patek are employers, charitable, and do well for others, but that is NOT the message people see when they first look at you, and you never have the chance to explain.

This is a good watch for meeting with vendors, and it has better lume than the Sinn.

Bye the bye, has your friend seen this thread?

x2!
I happen to think the yg blue-on-blue Sub is one of the most substantial, classic and good looking solid gold watches on the market... true, the serti dial with diamonds isn't for everyone....but the watch itself?

I would love a solid gold sub with a black nipple dial or the gold GMT with the green face then again I would love a few of the PPs as well. To each their own
