New GMT II

Well, new member here, and wanted to ask a question of any of the veteran Rolex experts on the forum..

I just placed an order for the new 2007 GMT II with the green GMT hand and was trying to find out a bit more info on it. I'd read someplace that it has a new movement, but I can't find anything about this. Does anyone have any of the details of this movement, what changed from the prior movement?

A bit about me... I've been into watches for about 20 years now, and have owned or continue to own Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Breitling, Omega, Oris, watches.. currently, I have two AP's and two Rolex including this new one, and not including the Rolex I bought my wife ;)

Anyway, any help or info is appreciated as it seems the internet doesn't have much (including the Rolex site) on this new model.

Hi and welcome MD11F,

Basically, same movement as the listed (on the rolex site) TT and 18K models. Of course everything is conjecture if you're talking about the SS version as it isn't yet officially anounced until April.

Welcome to the forum. One thing that has changed is the use of the new PARACHROM hairspring used in the new movement. Rolex.com has some info on it.

Hi and welcome to TRF.

Mike has given you an excellent link to the new product from Rolex which should answer your questions.

Cheers - JJ

Just called an AD here but was told that they do not accept any order for the 2007 new GMTII as they are also not aware that Rolex is coming out with a new model. Was really puzzled how come your AD is accepting your order

Well, AD accepting orders for the 50th Anniversary GMT Master II is reasonable, I even saw it in showcase in one of the AD stores around my place.

It sounds more odd that your AD doesn't know about the new model, maybe he/she is thinking about the SS model instead of the TT.
The TT models has been in catalogs already, maybe you want to double check with your AD.

Oh i was enquiring on the SS GMT II with my AD here. Apparently he has not heard any news about it. Ha Ha.. maybe he is trying to sell off the remaining gmt II stock before the SS is officially launched.

Hi Lt., ginzo.. yes actually I fly Mad Dog for GAC, an ACMI freight company out of IAD. We've been flying 11's since 2000. Fred pays better, but I love the schedule and home base, which gives me time to pursue other things.

Eric, the dealer accepted my "order" since I do A LOT of business with him.. it's not so much an order, as "you've got the next one, which is due inside a week".. type of thing.. ;)

thanks for the good link guys... BTW.. went to the Rolex site, sure has come a long way, especially since they were so resistant to the whole idea of a website for so long.

no actually I've got too many SS watches now, the two AP's and my Daytona.. This is a Two Tone GMT II.. the 2007 model. My last TT Rolex was a Blue Dial Sub that got SO MUCH attention that I sold it so I'd stop being harassed, and I swore off Gold on a watch, but I fell for this one I guess.

Thanks, I'd guess there are quite a few of us here then.

Oddly besides a Breitling Aerospace that I have laying around someplace (needs batteries).. I've never owned any "pilots watches" until this one now. I suppose the GMT hand will come in handy since all we do at GAC is in GMT.

BTW.. what's the preferred mode of operation.. Local time on the normal hand, and GMT on the 24hr hand? or the other way around?

Hi guys,

I'm new here am eyeing a GMT II. From what I've seen on the Rolex website, the 2007 GMT II's come w/ the Triplelock crowns right? And I suppose it will be the same on even the SS models right?

Thanks for responding and cheers!

I always thought (and this is what I do) GMT on the hour hand and local on the second 24 hr hand, reading off the bezel. The bezel is easier to change as you move from one timezone to another.

I'm not sure if this merits a new thread, or just keep it in this one, but today I went to pick this up..

For me this watch is a home run... looks, the new larger crown, the new bezel, and the awesome new clasp (I never thought Rolex was going to fix that on the GMT or Sub).

Congrats on a beautiful watch! I'm not sure if an exposition of the new clasp has already been done but... for those like me, could you go into some detail about the materials, construction, operation, impressions and (bonus) pics of the new clasp. It looks machined, not stamped, and much improved. Details, details...

Let me add my welcome to TRF, MD. Great watch choice. Welcome to the 4 hand club.

Miner's idea is a good one. If you normally operate on GMT, I would keep the small hour hand tuned to GMT and read local time off the 24 hour hand and bezel. It is easier to rotate the bezel than to unscrew the crown and adjust the small hour hand each time you change time zones.

First, thanks for the warm welcome fellas..

Yea.. this clasp is perfect, Even compared to my favorite Omega and AP claps, it's as good or better. I'm not known to be a easy to please on fit and finish. Overall, the watch felt a bit more "tight".. the tolerances seemed closer than I recall on my last Rolex some 3 years ago, it had a quiet sound to it when I handled it, not at all clunky.

As for the clasp specifically.. It's a heavy feeling, solid mechanism, much like (but not exactly) like the Daytona. It feels beefier than the Daytona's (at least my 2003 model). The gold is not just lightly brushed on either, but deeply inlayed.. the whole thing snaps with a tight click that feels of quality. 10 out of 10..

Thanks, pal....that's one helluva superb looking clasp.

Would it be possible (if it's not too much trouble) to have some real good and clear close-ups of the markings on BOTH clasps and BOTH sides?

Thanks in advance - JJ

The gold is "deeply inlaid?" I thought it was SOLID.
