My wife and I just returned home from a mall in Columbus. After we got our drinks at Starbucks, we sat down at one of the seating areas in the aisles of the mall to people watch, which is always very interesting. We sat down on a leather sofa big enough to seat four or five people, and there was already an older gentleman sitting on one end. We sat down at the other end, and after a few minutes my wife tapped me on the arm and pointed out that the man on the other end had not only dozed off, but he was wearing a beautiful TT Blue Sub

( I was wearing my SS Sub tonight)
We sat for a little while longer and he had woken up just before we decided to get up and walk away. I thought about complimenting on his Sub, but I decided not to because I wasn't sure if he would have appreciated me staring at his watch while he was napping in the mall.
I was just curious if anyone here ever compliments fellow Rolex owners on their watches even if they are complete strangers.

I always compliment others on their watches. It is a great way to meet new people. In my experience, not all people wearing Rolexes are enthusiasts like us but many are. I had finished lunch recently at a vietnamese restaraunt in lower Manhattan and I was at the front counter paying my bill. I looked to my right and there was an asian girl standing next to me waiting for takeout. Not only was she very attractive, but she had on a datejust. I complimented her on it and showed her my GMT. She said she also owned a Yatchmaster!! My kind of woman...beautiful and a Rolex fan. If I wasn't married I would have surely asked her out. Rolexes are a great icebreaker!!

I agree, I always compliment. Unless the guy seems like a jerk.

I always compliment ...whether the guy/gal is a jerk or a very nice person.Couldnt care less if he/she is a jerk..

The Rolex cant pick the buyer ...

I must say, nearly all responses have been extremely positive,although the knowledge are a bit slim,from most of them.Have to accept that most are just not as intensely focussed ,as most hanging around here ...

Barring the jerk factor, I would.

That said, there's this one guy I see on the bus every morening on the way to work, and he's got a habit of taking off his SS Black GMT and looking around while he holds it high up and winds it. I've thought about asking him if the rotor's broken or something, but I've decided that it's not worth getting into conversation with someone who's ostentatious about wearing a Rollie. Sure, it's a nice watch, but people need to get over themselves.

I'm always a bit backward at coming forward so I probably wouldn't. For instance, yesterday I was sat drinking coffee in a cafe and a guy a few tables away was wearing a gold daytona. I wish I'd complimented him on it but maybe he didn't want to bring attention to it.

I recently saw a guy in the First Class lounge at the Frankfort, Germany Airport. He was wearing an Explorer 1. I complimented him on his watch and that led into a long conversation about Rolex and watches. Good way to pass the time while waiting for a flight

Many of the guys I served with overseas had Rolex watches. Even befoe I bought one, I complimented them on their watches and they were always ready to tell me about their watch and let me see the watches up close.

One thing that in interesting, in my experience I have found many of the guys I meet who are into guns and knives (2 other areas I am into and collect) are also into watches!

Depends on the person that the Rollie is attached to. I myself am flattered if someone notices my SS Sub because more often than not they are also watchnuts and an enjoyable conversation can result

Doesn't have to be a Rolex.
It also depends on the situation.
I have done so many times & it quite often leads to some good convesations.
My wife just rolls her eyes & tells me to meet her somewhere later when I af finished.

Funny you should mention this.

I'm facinated by knives myself. Most specifically the Rambo knives. I've got all 3 from the movies. They were issued by United Cutlery which went into bankruptcy about 4 months ago. Yeah, I know, they are only replica's. I'd like to find a Jimmy Lile proto-type though. Have you ever owned one?

LOL - some people say that about a genuine Rolex for security reasons. They are not sure if they'll wind up handing it over to you in a back alley somewhere.

Ive pointed out a young mans MINT (i mean bloody mint) vintage GMT. I said, "ah you like vintage watches?"
He said, "oh this old thing, it was my dads."

Very beautiful but it makes people uncomfortable sometimes.
I don't like when people point out my watch at work. Makes me feel uneasy around my co-workers. But other than that i love compliments on my little guys :)

I think you are correct that it quite often makes people uncomfortable. They're not sure what they should say about an obviously fine timepiece - should I be humble or should I just say "Damn straight its a bloody fine looking watch!". I go ahead and make the comment to the person and let the answer fall where it may. More often than not, it is a great icebreaker and becomes a topic of conversation.
