Submariner

About 7 years ago, a former shipmate of mine graduated from Tulane Law School In New Orleans. For his accomplishment, his wife purchased for him a very nice pre-owned Cadillac Seville STS and a SS Rolex Submariner. One day as he showed me the watch, he pulled it off and handed it to me. Upon examining the watch, I turned it over and saw that it had a partial display case back.

I had never looked at or handled any Subs before then, but I was surprised to find the display case back on a Rolex.

But now, looking back... was that watch really a genuine Rolex or a fake? Do Subs have, or have they ever had display case backs?

Unless it was custom made (see, for instance, what Hannes did here (check the Glasback link): http://www.oysterworld.de/1/index.htm) or it was one of the rare exhibition back Oysters seen here (scroll down half way: http://www.ukwatches.com/frame.html), it's fake.

No modern day Rolex comes from the factory with a view glass back.Only a few were ever made,as prototypes, most are still with Rolex, one or two with collectors like James Dowling.

Well, I guess you can't always look at a Rolex and call it fake. You must read between the lines. I mean, I have an aftermarket president band on my DJ. Someone would probably call it fake because a DJ doesn't come on that style band. Thats why I don't share my love of Rolex with other people. I have a plated president band that is identical to my ss on my gold DJ. Someone would call that fake too because of the band being steel with no gold plate underneath.

Sounds like a fake submariner most likely...

I wonder if the Cadillac had a Hyundai motor under the hood?

Looks like the manufacturer referenced in your post is back in business because a seller from Germany has had these listed recently, but with sapphire crystal:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?..._promot_widget

Most have sold for around $100 U.S., I bought one and am waiting for it to arrive now. Like the Oysterworld article, I'm going to install it and have it vacuum tested. Any time I want to switch it back to stock, I can.

Sorry about that Scooby! Good info. However, the second link didn't come up for me. Thanks anyway though.

yeah, the second link didn't really work. It's to James Dowling's site (padi referenced him as well) and talks about having one of only 2 known official Rolex exhibition backs out in the public.

Anyway, I was just joking. More ragging on JJ than anything else for stealing my moment of glory, since I only get so many of them.
