Gold amounts?

The Manager of a AD I went to and I were talking about how gold prices have effected the price of TT and gold Rolex. Does anybody know or have a link to the actual gram/ounce weight of how much gold Rolex puts into each model of its watches?

Good point, Tim...something that I've always wondered about.

On another forum, someone did the math and came up with this:

Weight of TT Sub = 150 grams (16613)
Weight of SS Sub = 135 grams (16610)

Difference of 15 grams to be doubled = 30 grams of actual gold in the watch (this includes links, bezel and crown). Don't ask me how he came up with that result, but maybe some of the mathematicians on this forum can help us out.

Cheers - JJ

I don't think Rolex will ever advertise how much actual gold goes into there watches because the gold value in the watch is extremely small compared to the price of the watch.

Say an average two tone Rolex costs approx $8000USD. In todays market that would buy you over 3/4 of a pound of 9999 pure gold! If the avg tt Rolex has 30-40 grams of 18k gold, then it contains 22.5-30.0 grams of 24k gold. Not even one whole troy ounce! Obviously, we are not paying for the gold. We are paying for perceived value, not actual value.

Well said, Steve. But there's another matter to be considered. It is true that the process of fusing the 18 K gold onto the steel of the clasp is a complicated and an expensive process.

I know that the 18K Day/Date has 4.5 oz of pure gold in it. Total weight of gold in the watch is 6 oz of 18K or 4.5 oz when converted to 18K. At the current approx price of gold at $635 /oz. that makes the intrinsic value of the gold alone at about $2858 USD.

The typical gents Rolex President looks rather impressive due to its large mass and weight not to mention the large price tag that goes with them. But the actual gold value is in a Rolex ? like all gold watches are in reality very poor value for money .Below is a breakdown of a 18kt President . Without the movement, the crystal and other non-gold parts. Each was weighed using a laboratory grade scientific balance. Now all the values were based on the spot price then of gold at $400.00 per troy ounce,so do your sums on todays price.

Now all precious metals are weighed using the troy system. One troy ounce contains 31.1 grams of a particular precious metal. There is 480 grains in one troy ounce. Now If for example we use the above spot price for gold at $400.00 per troy ounce, the value per gram would be $12.86. Using these standards, the actual gold value in the Gents Rolex President would be just $963.27.

The case ring weights 18.5 grams. Contains 13.875 grams of pure gold. It has a value of $178.43.

Case back weighs 7.21 grams. And contains just 5.41 grams of pure gold. It has a value of $69.57.

Bezel weighs 5.30 grams. Contains 3.98 grams of pure gold. It has a value of $51.18.

The bracelet weighs 68.85 grams. Contains 51.64 grams of pure gold. It has the largest value at $664.09.

The total value of the pure 24kt. gold in the average Rolex President is $963.27.Above is based on a 18ct watch.

[Trying to imagine the coin volume compaired to the links and bezel...]

My 116718 weighs a hefty 233 grammes (or 8 1/4 ounces).

Call it 7 ounces less the movement / ceramic. 18ct = 75% gold content.

£340 per ounce X 5.5 ounces = £1870 worth of gold if melted. (Edit - Troy ounces almost 10% heavier so reduce the amount)

Not much, considering how much it cost but how much would a SS watch be worth melted down?

£0.25 ?
