The skill and beauty of old world craftmanship

This pocket watch, accurately dated to 1762, belongs to a friend but became an acquaintance after he entrusted it to me in a state of disrepair with several parts missing. It took 12 months and two transatlantic trips to put it back together, but here is what an old English verge fusee pocket watch looks like up close and personal. I love poking around with these antiques:

My God, that is a beautiful piece. I'm wondering (not being particularly bright about these things) how on earth they ever got such detail on a small surface back then - was it all done by hand?

Great pictures, Al - just wonderful. The kind of thing I come here for. Thanks a million for posting!

It was indeed done entirely by hand Dick, that's why it took a master watchmaker the best part of a year to make one and why only the elite of the day (or sea captains in this case) had them.

My pleasure. My only regret is that I don't own it!

Absolutely amazing craftmanship.

And in wonderful condition.

What is the small dial on the back used for?
Is it some kind of power reserve?

Indeed, this has brought back memories.
I used to collect key wind pocket watches and had a very similar verge/fusee movement.
the face was quite different but the filigree movement design was almost identical. I think i case dated it to 1780... I remember the little face below the circle.
The verge escapement was one of the earliest escapements starting around 1400's and lasting until the early 1800's. Its a beauty.

That is a phenomenal piece, absolutely amazing craftsmanship.

I am also curious about the dial on the back.

Nope, it's just the timing adjustment.
