Serial Number question on man's Cellini

Hi. I am trying to buy my husband a manual wind gold Rolex. I understand that this is probably a Cellini. I looked at one at a small jeweler yesterday and the serial number and model were on the back of the case. The lady said that it was a 1999 model serial beginning with A. I did not notice the Rolex crown which I am told should be on the back of the case. On the front, it said Rolex Geneve and Cellini at the bottom. Is this watch authentic? Are the serial numbers located differently on some of the Cellinis?

It's hard to answer your question without knowing more about which model you're looking at. I've been looking at the older Cellini model 4112, and it has the model and S/N engraved on the back. It also has two small "mint marks" to confirm that the case is 18K gold. There is no Rolex crown on the back, unless it's one of the small mint marks.
The "A" serial corresponds to the 1999 time frame, so that is OK.
If the jeweler won't guarantee authenticity, then keep looking.

When you purchase, the retailer's sales slip should include a full description of the watch such as make, model, serial number, 18K, etc. With that, you should be comfortable with it since you are buying from a shop not internet. Any issues later, you have a sales receipt to prove it.

I have a 5112 that I purchased recently at auction. It has the model at the top of the case, and a serial number on the bottom "W003346" and then "18K" stamped below that. Is there a way I can attach a photo here? I would consider selling it. It is a beautiful dress watch with the mother-of-pearl face.

Correct. 16 days membership and 16 posts minimum to post in the For Sale forum, just like the rules say:

Ok - I've posted the Cellini in the FS forum. Thanks for your help. Photo of the back is included so you can see how it is stamped.

Great information, guys. A friend just passed along a 5112 to me to research for him. This is the right place! This one doesn't have anything on the case back like these. The search continues.
